Removals in Barrhead

House and flat moves across Barrhead and Neilston, from Cross Arthurlie Street closes to new builds off Springfield Road.

Sandstone tenements and shops on Main Street in Barrhead town centre

Barrhead is a former mill town on the Levern Water, and its streets still follow the old works. Main Street and Cross Arthurlie Street have sandstone tenements above the shops, with closes off the pavement and rear courts behind. Around the centre are the council estates of Dunterlie and Auchenback, with terraces, four-in-a-blocks and low flats from the 1930s to the 1960s, and on the edge of town, off Springfield Road and towards Lyoncross, the new-build estates that have brought a lot of young families out of Glasgow.

Removals in Barrhead usually involve one of three things: a close on Main Street where the van needs a gap on a bus route, a Dunterlie or Auchenback terrace with a front path and a rear lane, or a new build with a driveway but a cul-de-sac full of cars. We have crews who have done all three enough times to know the shortcuts.

As a Barrhead removal company we come out the M77 to Junction 3 and along Nitshill Road, or straight down the A736 from Hurlet, in around 25 minutes from the city centre. Phone Peter with the address and he will price it properly.

Moving in Barrhead: what we know

Main Street and Cross Arthurlie Street

Barrhead's centre is the junction of Main Street, Cross Arthurlie Street and Paisley Road, with the Foundry shopping arcade and the new leisure centre nearby. The tenements along Main Street and Cross Arthurlie Street are three storeys with closes straight off the pavement, tight half landings and rear courts through a pend. Main Street is a bus route with loading bays that are short and busy, so we usually sit on Carlibar Road, Kelburn Street or the Foundry car park and carry.

Dunterlie and Auchenback

Dunterlie, between Main Street and the railway, and Auchenback on the hill to the south-east, are council-built estates of terraces, four-in-a-block cottage flats and small blocks of flats. Many houses face a footpath with a parking court or lane at the back, the upper cottage flats have outside stairs, and the streets in Auchenback climb steeply enough that we park the van pointing uphill. Both estates have had newer infill housing added, with proper driveways.

Springfield, Lyoncross and the new estates

The new builds off Springfield Road, at Lyoncross and towards Darnley are where much of Barrhead's growth is. Modern semis, townhouses and detached homes with drives and integral garages, laid out on cul-de-sacs with speed cushions and tight corners. The staircases turn at a half landing and the doorways are standard modern width, so wardrobes and big beds are dismantled. The estates connect to the A736 Glasgow Road, so getting the van in from Glasgow is quick once the last corner is clear.

The A736, the M77 and Barrhead station

Barrhead is about 25 minutes from our base. The M77 to Junction 3 and Nitshill Road brings us in from the north-east, while the A736 from Hurlet is the direct road and the one we use for Neilston and the Springfield side. Barrhead station has regular trains to Central, and the streets around it, Carlibar Road and Arthurlie Street, are busy with commuter parking on weekday mornings. Gateside and Neilston further out are quieter villages with older stone houses and narrow lanes.

FAQ

Moving in Barrhead: your questions

Do you cover Neilston and Uplawmoor as well as Barrhead?
Yes. Neilston, Uplawmoor and Gateside are all part of our Barrhead work. The village roads are narrower and some of the older stone houses have low doors and stone steps, so tell Peter the street and he can decide whether the Luton or a smaller van is the right tool.
Where does the van park for a Main Street tenement in Barrhead?
The loading bays on Main Street are short and the buses need the kerb, so we normally use Carlibar Road, Kelburn Street or the Foundry car park and carry through the close. For a large move on a busy corner, East Renfrewshire Council can suspend a bay with a few days' notice, and Peter can explain the process.
Can you get a removal van into the new estates off Springfield Road?
Yes. The estate roads are fine for a Luton; the tight bit is the cul-de-sac at the end with cars on both kerbs. We ask you to keep your own driveway clear so the van can back onto it, and if the turning head is blocked we stop short and carry the last few doors.
How much is a move from Barrhead into Glasgow?
It starts from £200 for a one-bed, £300 for a two-bed and £500 for a three-bed, the same as anywhere in Glasgow, since Barrhead is a short run up the A736 or the M77. Peter will give a fixed price once he knows the property at both ends and the floor at the Glasgow side.
Our upper cottage flat in Auchenback has an outside stair. Is that a problem?
Not for us. The stair is straight and open, which is easier than a tenement close, but the doorway at the top is narrow and the hall turns, so we take beds and wardrobes apart and wrap the door frame. On the steeper streets we keep the van uphill of the house and use a sack truck for the heavy bits.
