Hyndland Removals

Red sandstone tenements, wally closes and four flights of stairs, moved by a local crew that knows the permit hours on Hyndland Road and Clarence Drive.

Red sandstone tenements on Hyndland Road, Glasgow

Hyndland was built in one go around 1900 and it shows. Almost every street, from Hyndland Road and Clarence Drive down through Novar Drive, Falkland Street and Lauderdale Gardens, is a run of red sandstone tenements with tiled wally closes, bay windows and rooms big enough to swallow a three-piece suite. Removals in Hyndland are nearly always tenement moves, and nearly always from the second, third or top floor.

Those flats hold a lot of furniture. A three-bed on Queensborough Gardens or Polwarth Street can take a full Luton and a second run, and everything comes down a stone stair with a tight turn at each half landing. Parking is permit-controlled on most streets during the day, and Hyndland Road, Clarence Drive and Crow Road carry buses, so we sort the van's position first and the packing second.

If you want a Hyndland removal company that turns up with enough crew for the stairs and has already worked out where the van is going, call Peter. He will ask you the floor, the street and roughly what you have, and give you a firm price for the day.

Moving in Hyndland: what we know

Parking on Hyndland Road and the drives

Hyndland's streets are inside a controlled parking zone with permit-only bays for most of the working day, and the residential streets like Novar Drive and Dudley Drive are parked solid on both sides by evening. For a full flat we apply to Glasgow City Council for a bay suspension outside your close; for a smaller move, an early start usually gets us a space before the day fills up.

The closes themselves

Hyndland's closes are the tiled kind, often with the original tilework intact, and the stairs are stone with wooden handrails. The half landings are the pinch points: a wardrobe or a large sofa needs to be tipped and turned at each one. We pad the close walls, protect the tiles and take our time, because the factor will notice a chipped tile faster than the neighbours will.

Clyde Tunnel and the Switchback

From Hyndland you are a few minutes from the Clyde Tunnel via Crow Road and Balshagray Avenue, which puts the Southside and the airport within easy reach, and a short run from Anniesland Cross for the Switchback Road out to Bearsden and Milngavie. A lot of our Hyndland customers are moving to one of those two places, and the journey is short enough that a second run is never a problem.

Hyndland station and the schools

The area around Hyndland station, Hyndland Secondary and the primary on Fortrose Street gets very busy at school drop-off and pick-up, and Clarence Drive's shops keep the kerb full through the day. If your close is near the station or the school gates we will plan around those windows rather than fight them.

FAQ

Moving in Hyndland: your questions

Do you need a parking permit to move on Hyndland Road?
In effect, yes, during permit hours. Hyndland Road is a bus route with very little free kerb and the side streets are permit-only during the day. We arrange a bay suspension with Glasgow City Council for full flat moves, which needs notice and a small fee. For a lighter move an early start and a short carry usually does it.
How many movers do you send for a top-floor Hyndland tenement?
For a two or three-bed on the top floor we send at least three, sometimes four, because everything comes down four flights of stone stairs by hand. That is faster and safer than two people making twice the trips, and it is built into the price you are quoted rather than added on the day.
Will you protect the tiled close?
Yes. We fit corner guards and sheeting to the close walls where the turns are tightest and cover the tiles at the foot of the stair. Factors and neighbours in Hyndland take the closes seriously, and so do we. If anything is marked despite that, we will tell you straight away.
Can you fit a large sofa down a Hyndland stair?
Usually. Most Hyndland stairs will take a three-seater on its end, tipped at each landing. Very deep corner sofas and some modern box-shaped ones will not, and in that case we either dismantle them or, for pieces that went in through a window, arrange to bring them out the same way. Send photos and we will tell you which.
How long does a move from Hyndland to Bearsden take?
The drive is about fifteen minutes up Crow Road and the Switchback, so the time is all in the loading. A typical three-bed Hyndland flat is a full day; a two-bed can often be loaded, driven and unloaded by mid-afternoon. Peter will give you a realistic timing when he prices it.
