Removals in East Kilbride

Terraces, four-in-a-blocks and modern estates across Scotland's first new town, from the Village to Lindsayfield.

Terraced houses and green space in Calderwood, East Kilbride new town

East Kilbride was laid out as a new town from 1947, and that shows in how you move around it: wide dual carriageways, dozens of roundabouts and neighbourhoods like Calderwood, Westwood, Greenhills, St Leonards and Murray, each with its own shops and its own web of cul-de-sacs. The original housing is terraces and four-in-a-block cottage flats from the 1950s and 60s, and around them are newer estates at Stewartfield, Lindsayfield, Jackton and Hairmyres with detached houses and double garages.

Removals in East Kilbride are mostly about finding the door. Streets in Calderwood and Westwood loop and branch, house numbers jump between blocks, and many terraces have a footpath at the front and vehicle access from a service road at the back. We know which way round to approach and where the van can stand without blocking the neighbours.

As movers in East Kilbride we come down the M74 to Junction 5 and along the East Kilbride Expressway, or the A726 from Newton Mearns, in around 30 minutes from the city centre. Phone Peter with the address and neighbourhood and he will quote from there.

Moving in East Kilbride: what we know

Calderwood and Westwood terraces

Calderwood and Westwood are the classic new town neighbourhoods: rows of 1950s and 60s terraced houses and four-in-a-block flats set among green spaces, with footpaths at the front and parking courts or service roads behind. Front doors often face a path rather than a road, so the carry can be longer than it looks. The houses are compact with straight stairs, and the four-in-a-blocks have an outside stair to the upper flat. We work out front or back access before the van arrives.

Stewartfield, Lindsayfield and Jackton

The newer estates to the north and west, Stewartfield off the Stewartfield Way dual carriageway, Lindsayfield towards Strathaven Road and the recent Jackton development near Hairmyres, are modern detached and semi-detached houses with driveways and double garages. Roads are wider than the old town neighbourhoods but the cul-de-sacs are tight, and turning a loaded Luton needs a clear turning head. Staircases with half landings mean beds and wardrobes are usually dismantled.

The roundabouts and the Expressway

East Kilbride is famous for roundabouts, from the Whirlies at the top of the Expressway to Kingsgate, Murray and Birniehill. They keep traffic moving but they confuse anyone unfamiliar with the town, and a wrong exit can add ten minutes. Our crews have driven them enough to know the lanes. The A725 East Kilbride Expressway links to the M74 at Raith and is the main route to Glasgow; it is busy at rush hour and best avoided between 7.30am and 9am.

The Village and the town centre

East Kilbride Village is the old settlement the new town grew around, with stone cottages, a narrow Main Street and older terraces on the streets around the parish church. Parking is limited and the Main Street is tight for a big van, so we use a smaller vehicle for Village moves. The town centre flats above and around the shopping centre have service yards and loading bays that need arranging with the management in advance.

FAQ

Moving in East Kilbride: your questions

Do you know your way around East Kilbride?
Yes, and it matters here more than most places. The crews know the roundabouts and the difference between a Calderwood address with front-path access and one with a service road behind. If you know which side the van should come to, tell Peter and it saves time on the day.
Is East Kilbride further than you normally go?
Not at all. It is about 30 minutes from our base via the M74 and the Expressway, and we are in East Kilbride most weeks. Prices are the same as in Glasgow: one-beds from £200, two-beds from £300 and three-beds from £500.
Our terrace in Westwood has no road at the front. How does that work?
We park on the service road or parking court at the back and carry through the garden, or on the nearest road at the front and carry along the path, whichever is shorter. We bring a sack truck and enough crew so the extra distance does not slow things down.
Can you move us from East Kilbride into Glasgow?
Yes, frequently. The Expressway and the M74 put you at the Kingston Bridge in half an hour outside rush hour, so the Southside, city centre and West End are all comfortable same-day moves. Parking at the Glasgow end is usually the harder part, and Peter will advise on that.
Do you need a permit to park a removal van in East Kilbride?
Rarely. Most houses have a driveway or a service road. Near the town centre and in the Village, South Lanarkshire Council can arrange a bay suspension with notice, and Peter can tell you whether your street needs one.
