Partick Removals

Dumbarton Road tenements, Gardner Street's slope and the Glasgow Harbour towers, moved by a crew that knows which closes take a sofa and which do not.

Sandstone tenements and shops on Dumbarton Road in Partick, Glasgow

Partick is one of the busiest and most varied areas we cover. The core is tenements: red and blonde sandstone on Dumbarton Road, Hyndland Street, Purdon Street and Chancellor Street, most of them four storeys with no lift. Then there is Gardner Street, the steepest residential street in the city, where the van has to be chocked and the carry is uphill. And down at the river, Glasgow Harbour's tall blocks have lifts, concierges and car parks the van cannot enter.

Removals in Partick have to deal with Dumbarton Road, which is a bus route with limited kerb and a lot of shop deliveries, and with side streets that are permit-controlled during the day. Partick station and the interchange bring constant traffic to Merkland Street and the streets around the Kelvin Hall. We work out where the van goes before we work out anything else.

If you are looking for movers in Partick who can tell you before the day whether your wardrobe will make the turn on the top landing, ring Peter with the address and the floor. The Clyde Tunnel is at the end of Dumbarton Road, so wherever you are heading, the drive is short.

Moving in Partick: what we know

Dumbarton Road and the side streets

Dumbarton Road is the spine of Partick and it is never quiet: buses, shop deliveries and the traffic heading for the Clyde Tunnel. We do not sit a van on it for long. For a Dumbarton Road tenement we load from the side street, whether that is Hyndland Street, Purdon Street or Peel Street, and for a full flat we arrange a bay suspension on that side street through Glasgow City Council so the crew is not carrying two closes' worth.

Gardner Street

Gardner Street climbs so steeply from Dumbarton Road that it has become a local landmark. Moving in or out of a flat there means parking on the slope with the wheels turned in, loading with the ramp on the uphill side and carrying at an angle for the whole job. We have done it plenty of times and it is fine, but it takes longer than a level street and we allow for that honestly.

Glasgow Harbour

The riverside blocks at Meadowside Quay and along Castlebank Street are the opposite of a tenement: lifts, wide corridors, a concierge and a fob at every door. The catch is the car park height barrier, which no removal van clears, so we park at street level and trolley through the main lobby. We book the lift with the concierge and bring protection for the floors.

Out through the tunnel

The northern mouth of the Clyde Tunnel sits at Thornwood, at the western end of Partick, so a move to the Southside, Renfrew, Paisley or the airport is a matter of minutes once the van is shut. Eastwards, the Clydeside Expressway gets you to the city centre and the M8 just as quickly. Partick jobs are rarely priced on the driving.

Typical Partick properties

  • Red and blonde sandstone tenement flats on Dumbarton Road, Hyndland Street, Purdon Street and Chancellor Street
  • Flats on the steep terraces of Gardner Street and Hayburn Street
  • High-rise apartment blocks at Glasgow Harbour with lifts and concierge
  • Main-door and ground-floor tenement flats around Mansfield Park and Partick Burgh Hall
  • Newer flats and townhouses around Beith Street and Thornwood towards the Clyde Tunnel

What to plan for

  • Bus lanes, deliveries and near-constant traffic on Dumbarton Road
  • Permit-controlled side streets during the working day
  • The gradient on Gardner Street, which affects how the van is parked and loaded
  • Height-barred underground car parks at Glasgow Harbour
  • Top-floor tenement flats with tight top landings and no lift

FAQ

Moving in Partick: your questions

Where does the van go for a flat on Dumbarton Road?
On the nearest side street rather than Dumbarton Road itself, because of the bus lane and the shop deliveries. For a small move we use a loading bay and carry; for a full flat we apply for a bay suspension on the side street through Glasgow City Council, which needs a few days' notice. Peter will tell you which suits your close.
Can you move me out of a flat on Gardner Street?
Yes. We park with the van pointing uphill, chock the wheels and load from the high side of the ramp so the tailgate sits level. It is slower than a flat street and we send an extra person for the carry. If you send a photo of where your close is on the slope, we can quote it accurately.
How does a Glasgow Harbour move work with the concierge?
We phone the concierge or the factor ahead of the day to book the service lift and agree the entrance. The van stays at street level on Castlebank Street or Meadowside Quay, and we trolley everything through the lobby with floor protection down. Most moves there are straightforward as long as the lift is booked.
Do you do Partick to Southside moves through the Clyde Tunnel?
Very often. The tunnel entrance at Thornwood is a couple of minutes from most of Partick, so Govan, Shawlands, Pollokshields and Paisley are all a short run. Because the driving is so quick, a two-bed tenement move from Partick to the Southside usually fits into a single day with time to spare.
What does a one-bed or man and van move in Partick cost?
One-bed flats in Partick start from £200 and two-beds from £300, and a single-room man and van job comes in under that. The exact figure depends on the floor, whether we need a parking suspension and how much you have, which is why Peter asks a few questions before giving you a fixed price.
