Dennistoun Removals

Tenement moves on Duke Street, Alexandra Parade and the Drives, ten minutes from our base in the city centre.

Sandstone tenements with bay windows on Onslow Drive, Dennistoun

Dennistoun is a grid of sandstone tenements between Duke Street and Alexandra Parade, with the Drives (Onslow, Roselea, Finlay, Craigpark) running across it and Alexandra Park at the top. It has become one of the most popular places in Glasgow for first flats and renters, which means we are in and out of these closes most weeks, often moving people from one Drive to another.

Removals in Dennistoun are all about the close. Most blocks are three or four storeys, some with the original tiled walls, and the stairs are stone with a turn at every landing. Ground-floor flats on Meadowpark Street and Whitehill Street often have a back door to the drying green, which we use for bikes and garden bits. Parking on the Drives is dense at any hour, and Duke Street has bus lanes and loading restrictions for most of its length.

As a Dennistoun removal company we are close enough to arrive before the parking fills, and the team knows which closes on Craigpark and Westercraigs have the wide Victorian stairs and which ones on Bellgrove Street are tight. Give Peter the address and floor and you will have a price the same day.

Moving in Dennistoun: what we know

The Drives: Onslow, Roselea, Finlay and Craigpark

The residential heart of Dennistoun is the grid of Drives between Duke Street and Alexandra Parade, plus Golfhill Drive and Circus Drive nearer the park. Most are three-storey tenements with bay windows and stone stairs, and a few, particularly on Craigpark and Westercraigs, are larger Victorian flats with wider closes. Parking is nose to tail on both sides at all hours, so we arrive early and, where possible, ask neighbours the night before to leave a gap outside the close.

Duke Street and Alexandra Parade

Duke Street is the main artery, with shops at ground level, flats above and bus lanes running for most of its length. Loading directly outside a Duke Street close is limited to short bursts outside the bus lane hours. Alexandra Parade is wider but is a busy route to the M8 at Junction 13 and has bus stops outside many closes. In practice we park round the corner on the nearest Drive and carry from there, which keeps the van legal and the crew moving.

Bellgrove, Whitehill Street and the west end of Dennistoun

Towards Bellgrove station and the Tennent's brewery the closes on Bellgrove Street, Whitehill Street and Meadowpark Street are older and tighter, with narrow inner doors and some four-storey stairs. Dennistoun's conservation area status means many original storm doors and stair rails are still in place, and we protect them with corner guards and blankets. The newer flats around Bellgrove station and off Duke Street at the old Wills factory site have lifts and loading bays, which is a welcome change.

Getting to Dennistoun from the city centre

From West George Street it is under ten minutes along Cathedral Street and John Knox Street, or the M8 to Junction 13 for Alexandra Parade. Dennistoun is one of the closest neighbourhoods to our base, so early starts are easy. Moves out to the East End along Duke Street, north to Bishopbriggs via Cumbernauld Road, or south over the Clyde by the M74 all begin within minutes of leaving the close.

FAQ

Moving in Dennistoun: your questions

Where will the van park for a flat on one of the Drives?
As close to your close as the parked cars allow. If you can ask neighbours to leave a gap outside the door the night before, it saves the crew a long carry. Where that is not possible, Peter can advise on a temporary bay suspension from Glasgow City Council, which needs around two weeks of notice.
Do you do one-bed flat moves in Dennistoun?
They are the most common job we do here. A one-bed tenement move with a van and two crew starts from £200 and usually takes half a day, stairs included. Add boxes and packing if you want the whole flat done in one go.
Will my sofa get down a Dennistoun close?
In nearly every case, yes. The stairs are tight but the ceilings are high, so we stand sofas on end and walk them round each landing. If a piece will not go, we tell you before we start rather than after we have scratched your wall.
Can you move me from Dennistoun to the West End or Southside?
Yes, and both are straightforward. The West End is 15 to 20 minutes via the M8 or Great Western Road, and the Southside is a short run over the M74 or the Kingston Bridge. The stairs at each end matter more to the price than the distance.
