Hamilton Removals

House and flat moves across Hamilton and ML3, from Victorian villas on Bothwell Road to family homes in Low Waters, Earnock and Silvertonhill.

Shops and sandstone buildings on Quarry Street in Hamilton town centre

Hamilton is the biggest town in South Lanarkshire and one we drive to most weeks. The centre around Quarry Street, Cadzow Street and New Cross has flats above the shops and older tenements on the streets running down to Hamilton Central station. Bothwell Road and the avenues behind it hold Victorian villas and big semis, Silvertonhill has post-war semis and bungalows on gentle hills, and Low Waters, Fairhill, Eddlewood, Hillhouse and Earnock are the family estates that make up most of the town's housing.

Removals in Hamilton are rarely about stairs, since most of the stock is houses, but they are about distance and driveways. Estate roads in Earnock and Hillhouse are wide enough for a Luton, though the cul-de-sacs off them fill up with cars and the older council streets in Burnbank and Whitehill have front paths rather than road access.

As a Hamilton removal company we come down the M74 to Junction 6 for the centre and Bothwell Road, or Junction 5 at Raith for Hillhouse and Earnock, which is about 30 minutes from Glasgow. Give Peter the address and he will quote for the whole job including the drive.

Moving in Hamilton: what we know

Town centre, Quarry Street and the stations

The centre of Hamilton is compact, with pedestrianised sections on Quarry Street and Cadzow Street and a one-way system around New Cross and Castle Street that catches people out. Flats above the shops and the tenements on Brandon Street and Clydesdale Street are reached by closes off side lanes, and loading is restricted during shop hours. Hamilton Central and Hamilton West stations both have trains to Central, and the streets between them, Portland Place and Union Street, are where much of the flat work is.

Bothwell Road and Silvertonhill

Bothwell Road, running from the centre out towards Bothwell, is lined with large Victorian villas, many now split into flats, with long gravel drives and mature trees over the road. The avenues off it, Auchingramont Road, Woodlands Road and the streets near the racecourse, are similar. Silvertonhill on the other side of the town is 1950s and 60s semis and bungalows on Silvertonhill Avenue and the streets around it, with driveways, small front gardens and sloping plots that make the last few metres awkward with a sack truck.

Low Waters, Fairhill, Eddlewood and Earnock

The south and west of the town is where most family moves happen. Low Waters Road runs out past Fairhill and Eddlewood, a mix of council-built terraces, four-in-a-blocks and private semis, and Earnock and Hillhouse have 1970s to 1990s estates of detached houses with integral garages. Access is generally good, though a few of the older Eddlewood terraces have a footpath at the front and a parking court behind, and we confirm which side to use before the van sets off from Glasgow.

The M74 and the drive from Glasgow

Hamilton is 30 minutes from our base on West George Street down the M74, and we time it to avoid the Raith interchange at rush hour, which can add 15 minutes on a bad day. Junction 6 puts the van on Bothwell Road and straight into the centre; Junction 5 and the A725 serve Hillhouse, Earnock and Burnbank. Hamilton Park racecourse meetings on summer evenings fill the streets between Bothwell Road and the Palace Grounds, so we check the fixture list before booking moves near there.

FAQ

Moving in Hamilton: your questions

Is Hamilton too far for a Glasgow removal company?
No. Hamilton is half an hour down the M74 and we are there most weeks. Prices start at the same point as Glasgow, one-beds from £200, two-beds from £300 and three-beds from £500, and Peter will tell you if the distance adds anything once he knows both addresses.
Can the van get to a flat above the shops on Quarry Street?
Yes, but not by parking on Quarry Street itself during the day. We use the service lanes behind the shops or the nearest side street off Cadzow Street and carry through the close. If the flat is high up with a narrow stair, Peter sends an extra pair of hands.
We are moving from Hamilton to a flat in Glasgow. Can you do both ends?
That is the usual job. We load in Hamilton in the morning, drive up the M74 and unload in Glasgow in the afternoon. The city end is where parking needs thought, so tell Peter the Glasgow street and floor and he will plan the van position and any permit before the day.
Do I need a parking permit for a removal van in Hamilton?
Usually not, because most Hamilton houses have a driveway or a quiet street. In the town centre and on the busier stretches of Bothwell Road, South Lanarkshire Council can suspend a bay with notice, and Peter can tell you if your address is one where that is worth doing.
Can you help with an office move in Hamilton?
Yes. We do small office and shop moves in the town centre and at the business parks off the A725, from £200 for a small unit. Evening or weekend slots are often better for centre addresses because the loading restrictions relax and the one-way system is quiet.
