Woodlands Removals

Tenements on West Princes Street, townhouses on Park Circus and everything on the hill between, with Charing Cross and the M8 a minute away.

Victorian terraces on Park Circus above Kelvingrove Park in Woodlands, Glasgow

Woodlands rises from Charing Cross and St George's Cross up to Park Circus, and the height matters. At the bottom you have the long tenement streets, West Princes Street, Arlington Street, Carnarvon Street and Woodlands Road, with four-storey closes and flats above the shops. At the top sit the Park District terraces, Victorian townhouses on Park Circus and Park Terrace now split into flats, offices and the odd whole house.

Removals in Woodlands are almost always tenement or townhouse moves without a lift, and the Park District ones come with long external steps as well as internal stairs. The streets sit in controlled parking zones, and Woodlands Road and Great Western Road are bus routes, so we work out the van's position with the council or the close in advance. Being a minute from Charing Cross, though, means once loaded you are on the M8 in no time.

As a Woodlands removal company we have carried up and down enough of these stairs to know which townhouse doors need the frame padded and which Arlington Street closes have the narrow half landings. Phone Peter, tell him the street and the floor, and he will quote it properly.

Moving in Woodlands: what we know

West Princes Street and the long tenement rows

West Princes Street runs the full width of Woodlands and is lined with tenements on both sides, mostly parked out by mid-morning. Its neighbours, Arlington Street, Baliol Street and Willowbank Street, are the same. We book a bay suspension with Glasgow City Council for a full flat here, because a van two closes away means a long carry every trip and that is what pushes a job into a second day.

Park Circus and the Park District

The townhouses on Park Circus, Park Terrace and Park Quadrant are five storeys tall including the basement, with a flight of stone steps to the front door and a service stair below. Ceilings are very high and the furniture is often to match. We bring extra crew, long-reach straps and door protection, and the newer Park Quadrant flats have lifts that we book with the concierge.

Woodlands Road and the buses

Woodlands Road is a bus route with short-stay bays outside the shops and cafés, and it is one of the main ways into the West End from Charing Cross. We avoid stopping on it for more than a few minutes. For flats above the Woodlands Road shops we usually load from the side streets, and Sunday mornings are the easiest time of the week for a van there.

The Charing Cross advantage

Woodlands sits directly on top of the M8 at Charing Cross, so a move from here to Paisley, Renfrew, the airport or East Kilbride is a motorway run from the first minute. The Kelvinbridge and St George's Cross subway stations bring a lot of students to the flats on Otago Street and Great Western Road, and those short moves within the West End we often do in one trip.

  • Bus lanes on Woodlands Road, Great Western Road and St George's Road
  • Very tall, heavy period furniture from high-ceilinged Victorian rooms

FAQ

Moving in Woodlands: your questions

Do I need a parking suspension to move on West Princes Street?
For a full flat, we recommend one. West Princes Street is permit-controlled during the day and parked solid at all hours, so without a suspension the van could end up several closes away. We apply to Glasgow City Council on your behalf; it needs a few days' notice and there is a council fee, which Peter will explain when he quotes.
How do you handle a townhouse move on Park Circus?
With more crew than usual and a slower pace. The front steps, the five floors and the size of the furniture all add up, so we typically send four people, use straps and sliders on the stairs, and pad the door frames. If the flat is on an upper floor of a converted townhouse we will ask for photos of the stair before the day.
Can you park on Woodlands Road for a flat above the shops?
Only briefly, because of the bus lane and the short-stay bays. We usually load from the nearest side street, such as Arlington Street or Lynedoch Street, and carry the short distance through the close. For anything more than a one-bed we would look at a suspension on the side street instead.
Is Woodlands inside the Low Emission Zone?
The zone boundary runs along the M8, so most of Woodlands is just outside it while Charing Cross and anything east of the motorway is inside. It changes nothing on your move because our vehicles are fine in the zone, and it means a move from Woodlands into the city centre is a straight drive.
How quickly can you move a one-bed from Woodlands to the Southside?
Once loaded, the drive over the Kingston Bridge to Shawlands or Pollokshields is ten to fifteen minutes. A one-bed from a second-floor flat on Carnarvon Street is normally loaded in a couple of hours, so the whole move fits comfortably in a morning. One-beds here start from £200.
