Removals in Mount Florida

Flat and house moves beside Hampden Park, timed to avoid event-day parking headaches.

Sandstone tenements on Cathcart Road with Hampden Park behind, Mount Florida

Mount Florida is a tenement neighbourhood built around Cathcart Road, Battlefield Road and the slope down to Hampden Park. Streets like Bolton Drive, Somerville Drive and Carmunnock Road are lined with three-storey sandstone closes, with a scattering of red-sandstone villas and 1930s semis as you head towards Kings Park. Our crew has moved people in and out of most of these streets and knows the closes well.

The thing that makes removals in Mount Florida different from anywhere else on the Southside is Hampden. On event days Glasgow City Council runs an event-day parking zone on the surrounding streets, permits only for several hours before and after kick-off, and the roads around Somerville Drive and Kingsley Avenue are closed or coned. Book a move on a Scotland match or a concert day without checking and the van simply cannot get near the door.

So when you ask us for a quote, the first thing we check is the Hampden fixture list. As movers in Mount Florida we would rather shift your date by a day than have you paying for a crew stuck behind a police cordon.

Moving in Mount Florida: what we know

Hampden event-day parking

On football and concert days the streets around Hampden Park, including Somerville Drive, Bolton Drive, Kingsley Avenue and parts of Cathcart Road and Prospecthill Road, fall under an event-day parking restriction run by Glasgow City Council. Only permit holders can park for several hours either side of the event, and road closures go up near the stadium. We check the fixture list before confirming any date within a few streets of the ground and will suggest an alternative if it clashes.

Cathcart Road and Battlefield Road closes

The tenements on Cathcart Road and Battlefield Road are typical Southside stock: three storeys, stone stairs, a turn at each landing and a storm door at the top. Ground-floor flats often have a back door onto the drying green, which can be handy for garden furniture and bikes. Cathcart Road itself is a bus route with double yellows outside most closes, so the van usually works from Bolton Drive, Brownlie Street or Clincart Road.

Mount Florida station and the railway bridges

Mount Florida and Kings Park stations sit either side of the area and the railway cuts through on embankments and bridges. Some approaches, particularly around Stanmore Road and the bridge on Cathcart Road, are narrower than they look on a map, and a long-wheelbase van needs care under the railway bridges. We plan the approach in advance rather than turning a 3.5 tonne van around on a residential street.

Getting to Mount Florida

From the city centre it is the Kingston Bridge onto the M74, off at Junction 1A for Polmadie and Aikenhead Road, or straight down Victoria Road and Cathcart Road if the motorway is busy. Either way it is about 15 minutes. Moves to Shawlands and Langside are a five-minute hop along Battlefield Road, and King's Park Avenue takes you out towards Rutherglen, Cathcart and the M74 at Junction 2 for the south and east.

  • Bus routes on Cathcart Road and Battlefield Road limiting where the van can wait

FAQ

Moving in Mount Florida: your questions

Can I move on a Hampden match day?
We would strongly advise against it if you are within a few streets of the stadium. The event-day parking zone means the van cannot park without a permit and the police close roads around Somerville Drive. Peter checks the fixture list when you enquire and will suggest the nearest clear day.
Where does the van park for a Cathcart Road flat?
Cathcart Road has double yellows and bus stops outside most closes, so we normally pull round the corner onto Bolton Drive, Brownlie Street or Clincart Road and carry from there. If the nearest side street is full, a temporary bay suspension from Glasgow City Council can be arranged with a week or two of notice.
Do you do small moves between Mount Florida and Shawlands?
All the time. A one-bed tenement move across the Southside is a half-day job for a van and two crew. It is priced from £200, and we can add packing or boxes if you want the whole thing done in a single visit.
Are there lifts in Mount Florida tenements?
No, the traditional closes on Cathcart Road, Bolton Drive and Battlefield Road are all stairs. A few newer blocks near the station have lifts. We ask about the floor and the stair when quoting so the crew size matches the job.
