Hillhead Removals
Student flats, family tenements and university moves around Byres Road and Great Western Road, timed for term dates and permit hours.

Hillhead is the busiest patch of the West End for us, and the calendar drives it. Removals in Hillhead peak in late June when leases end and again in September when they start, and in those weeks we can have three vans on the streets between Byres Road and the university. The rest of the year it is families in the big tenement flats on Cranworth Street and Cresswell Street, and academics moving in or out of the university's orbit.
The buildings are mostly blonde and red sandstone tenements, four storeys, no lift, with the top-floor flats up seventy-odd steps. Streets like Hillhead Street, Bank Street and Otago Street are inside the Hillhead controlled parking zone, so a van cannot simply sit outside a close during the working day without a permit or a suspension. We know which corners have a loading bay and which streets are one way, and we plan the van's position before we arrive.
For a Hillhead removal company that has carried more sofas up Gibson Street than it would care to admit, give Peter a call with the address and the floor and he will give you a firm price.
Moving in Hillhead: what we know
Term-time moving
The end of June and the second half of September are the two busiest weeks of our year, almost all of it within a few streets of the University of Glasgow. Student leases in Hillhead tend to end on the same few days, so if you are moving out of a flat on Hillhead Street or Great George Street, book early. A weekday morning slot in those weeks goes first.
The Hillhead parking zone
Most of the streets between Byres Road, Great Western Road and University Avenue are permit-only during the day, and Byres Road itself is a bus route with short-stay bays. We typically arrange a bay suspension through Glasgow City Council for a full flat, or for smaller moves we work from the loading bays and the quieter ends of Cresswell Street and Vinicombe Street.
Ashton Lane and the back lanes
Flats above Ashton Lane, Cresswell Lane and Ruthven Lane look easy on a map but the lanes are cobbled, narrow and closed to vehicles for much of the day. We carry from the nearest road, usually Byres Road or Cresswell Street, and we tell you honestly that these moves take longer. Bringing a third pair of hands is usually cheaper than the extra hour.
Big flats, big stairs
The tenements on Cranworth Street, Lilybank Gardens and Bute Gardens have generous rooms, bay windows and stairwells that turn tightly at each landing. Wardrobes, pianos and American-style fridges are the pieces that cause trouble. We measure on the day, take doors off their hinges when we need to and put them back before we leave.
