Shawlands Removals

Tenement flat moves around Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands Cross and Queen's Park, done by a crew that knows the closes.

Red sandstone tenements on Kilmarnock Road beside Queen's Park, Shawlands

Most of the moves we do in Shawlands come out of red or blond sandstone tenements between Kilmarnock Road, Pollokshaws Road and the top edge of Queen's Park. The closes are usually three storeys with a sharp turn at every half landing, so we bring enough people to walk sofas, wardrobes and mattresses down properly rather than scraping them round the corners.

If you are looking for removals in Shawlands, the first thing we sort out is where the van goes. Kilmarnock Road has bus lanes and loading restrictions, and the streets off it, Skirving Street, Deanston Drive and Moss-side Road, are full of resident cars by early evening. We aim to be there early, get the van tight to the close and keep the carry short.

As a Shawlands removal company we also know which blocks on Waverley Gardens have a rear lane worth using and which storm doors on Deanston Drive need lifting off their hinges for a big fridge freezer. Tell Peter the address, the floor and roughly what you own and he will give you a straight price.

Moving in Shawlands: what we know

Tenements between Kilmarnock Road and Queen's Park

The heart of Shawlands is late Victorian tenement, mostly three storeys with a handful of four-storey blocks near Shawlands Cross. Flats on Deanston Drive, Moss-side Road and Kilmarnock Road have high ceilings, bay windows and long hallways that hold a surprising amount of furniture, but the closes are narrow and the half landings turn tightly. Wardrobes and corner sofas usually need tilting and walking, and we cover the close walls before anything moves.

Parking around Shawlands Cross

Kilmarnock Road is a bus corridor with camera-enforced lanes, so the van never sits on it for long. We normally work from the side streets: Skirving Street, Langside Avenue or the quieter stretch of Pollokshaws Road near Langside Halls. Residents fill most spaces by 6pm, so a morning start gives us the best chance of getting the tail lift to your close. On a busy corner, a temporary bay suspension from Glasgow City Council is worth asking for and Peter can walk you through it.

Queen's Drive, Balvicar Street and Waverley Gardens

The streets running up to Queen's Park hold larger flats with box rooms, walk-in cupboards and heavier furniture than the average two-bed. Several blocks on Waverley Gardens and Balvicar Street have back-court access from a rear lane, which can cut the carry in half. Queen's Drive is wide but usually lined with parked cars, so we scout the nearest gap on the way in and, if needed, drop the crew first and bring the van round.

Journey times from the city centre and beyond

From our base on West George Street it is the Kingston Bridge and the M77, off at Junction 2 for Pollokshaws Road, which takes around 15 minutes outside the rush. Moves over to the West End go back across the Clyde by the Kingston Bridge or the Clyde Tunnel depending on the time of day. Heading further south to Giffnock, Newton Mearns or East Kilbride, the M77 and the A726 are simple from here.

FAQ

Moving in Shawlands: your questions

Can you park a removal van on Kilmarnock Road?
Only briefly for loading, and never in the bus lane during its hours. We usually pull into the nearest side street and carry from there. If your close opens straight onto Kilmarnock Road, Peter can advise on a bay suspension from Glasgow City Council so the van can sit safely outside.
Do you charge extra for a third-floor flat in Shawlands?
Stairs are built into the quote rather than added afterwards. When Peter prices the job he asks which floor you are on and whether the close has a lift (almost none in Shawlands do), then sends enough crew to handle the stairs without slowing the day down.
Will a three-seater sofa fit down a Shawlands close?
Nearly always, with the right technique. We take the feet off, stand it on end and walk it round each half landing. The odd very deep corner sofa needs to be split or brought through a window, and we will tell you honestly if we think that is the case when we see it.
How far in advance should I book a Shawlands move?
Two to three weeks is comfortable, and more if you need a Saturday at the end of the month. Short-notice moves are often possible during the week, so it is always worth phoning even if your entry date is close.
Can you help with a small flat move rather than a full house?
Yes. A lot of Shawlands work is single-room or one-bed moves for renters between tenement flats. A man and van service with one or two crew is often enough for those, and Peter will tell you which option makes sense once he knows what you have.
