Removals in Milngavie

From the pedestrian precinct by the station to the big houses in Dougalston and Tannoch, we move Milngavie families in and out at a sensible price.

The pedestrian precinct and West Highland Way obelisk in Milngavie town centre

Milngavie is the end of the line: the last station on the railway, the start of the West Highland Way, and the last town before the Campsies. The centre is a small pedestrian precinct around Douglas Street and Station Road, with flats above the shops, and the housing spreads out from there: Victorian villas near the station, 1930s bungalows off Strathblane Road and Glasgow Road, post-war estates at Clober and Mains, and the large modern houses of Dougalston and Tannoch.

Removals in Milngavie are mostly house moves with a driveway, which is straightforward, but the precinct is not. The pedestrianised streets have restricted vehicle access, so a flat above the shops needs an agreed loading time and a short carry from Woodburn Way. The run into Glasgow via Milngavie Road and the Switchback can take forty minutes at the wrong time of day and fifteen at the right one.

As a Milngavie removal company we are here most weeks, often bringing families up from the West End or moving retirees into the bungalows. Ring Peter, tell him the address and the size of the house, and he will give you a firm price and an honest timing.

Moving in Milngavie: what we know

The precinct and the flats above the shops

The town centre precinct is closed to general traffic, so for flats above the shops on Douglas Street, Station Road or Main Street we agree an access window and work from the nearest point a van can legally stop, usually Woodburn Way or the station side. It is a short carry but it needs planning, and East Dunbartonshire Council can advise if a loading permission is required for your address.

Dougalston, Tannoch and the big houses

The detached houses on the Dougalston estate and around Tannoch Drive are among the largest we move in the north of Glasgow: four and five bedrooms, double garages, and long, sometimes sloping driveways. These are two-van or two-day jobs more often than not, and we say so at the quote rather than on the day. Gravel and steep gradients on some drives mean we occasionally load from the road.

Bungalows and the post-war estates

Clober, Mains and the streets off Strathblane Road are bungalows and semi-detached houses with shorter drives and modest gardens. They are the easy end of Milngavie: the van gets to the door, the rooms are on one or two levels and the carry is short. Many have a dormer bedroom in the roof, which is the one place we need to plan a bit more carefully.

Milngavie to Glasgow and beyond

Milngavie Road through Bearsden to the Switchback is the main way into the city and it queues badly in the peaks. Off-peak it is about fifteen minutes to Anniesland Cross and twenty-five to the city centre. For moves north, the A81 through Strathblane and the A809 towards Drymen are on the doorstep, and we cover Milngavie to Stirlingshire and Loch Lomond side as readily as Milngavie to the West End.

Typical Milngavie properties

  • Large detached family homes on the Dougalston estate and around Tannoch
  • Victorian and Edwardian villas near Milngavie station and on Station Road
  • 1930s bungalows and semis off Strathblane Road and Glasgow Road
  • Post-war semi-detached houses and bungalows in Clober and Mains
  • Flats above the shops in the town centre precinct and newer apartment blocks nearby

What to plan for

  • Pedestrianised town centre with restricted vehicle access for flats above the shops
  • Long, steep or gravelled driveways on the larger estates
  • Peak-time queues on Milngavie Road, Bearsden Road and the Switchback
  • Four and five-bedroom houses that need two vans or two days
  • Dormer bedrooms up narrow loft stairs in extended bungalows

FAQ

Moving in Milngavie: your questions

Can you get a van into Milngavie town centre for a flat above the shops?
Not into the precinct itself during normal hours. We arrange a loading time, park on Woodburn Way or by the station and carry the short distance. It adds a little time, which is built into the quote. If your building has a rear service access, tell us, because that often solves it entirely.
How long does a move from Milngavie to the West End of Glasgow take?
The drive is fifteen to twenty minutes outside the rush hour via Bearsden and the Switchback Road, but closer to forty at peak. We plan to travel mid-morning or early afternoon. For a typical three-bed it is a full day including loading and unloading, and Peter will give you a realistic finish time.
Do you do big house moves in Dougalston?
Yes, and we treat them as big jobs from the start. A four or five-bed with a double garage usually means two van loads, and we would rather quote it as two vans or two days than have you waiting for a second trip late in the evening. Peter will ask about the garage, loft and garden before he prices it.
Do we need any council permission for a move in Milngavie?
For a house with a driveway or unrestricted street parking, no. For the town centre precinct or a street with short-stay bays near the station, we check with East Dunbartonshire Council and arrange whatever is needed. Either way, it is something we handle rather than something you need to chase.
Can you move us from Milngavie to somewhere outside Glasgow?
Yes. Milngavie is well placed for the A81 and A809 north, so moves to Strathblane, Drymen, Balloch and Stirlingshire are common, as are longer runs to Edinburgh or the north of England. Give Peter both addresses and he will quote the whole job, including the driving time, in one fixed price.
