Merchant City Removals

Warehouse conversions, concierge blocks and cobbled lanes between Ingram Street and the Trongate, moved by a crew that knows which door the lift is behind.

Converted sandstone warehouses and cobbles on Candleriggs in Glasgow's Merchant City

The Merchant City packs a lot of flats into a small grid. Converted tobacco and textile warehouses on Bell Street and Wilson Street, the former Sheriff Court on Ingram Street, new-build blocks on Candleriggs and Albion Street, all of them a couple of minutes' walk from Glasgow Cross. We handle removals in Merchant City with the same crew that covers the rest of the city centre, and most of the buildings are ones we have been inside before.

What makes a Merchant City move different is the building, not the street. Nearly every block has a lift, a concierge or a fob-controlled entrance, and most have rules about when you can move and which lift you can use. We phone ahead, book the lift with the factor or concierge, and bring floor protection for the marble and tiled lobbies that a lot of these conversions still have.

If you are looking for movers in Merchant City who will turn up on time, protect the building and get you loaded before the bars on Merchant Square fill up, give Peter a call and describe the flat. He will give you a straight price.

Moving in Merchant City: what we know

Lifts, fobs and concierge desks

Blocks like the Italian Centre, the Bell Street warehouses and the newer builds around Candleriggs run on fob access and, in several cases, a staffed concierge. The concierge will often hold a lift for a booked move but not for one that turns up unannounced. We confirm the lift booking, the door widths and the loading entrance the day before so nothing sits in the lobby waiting.

Where the van actually goes

Ingram Street is one way for much of its length, Wilson Street and parts of Candleriggs are cobbled and partly pedestrianised, and Glassford Street and High Street carry buses. The reliable loading spots are Bell Street, Albion Street and the bays off Hutcheson Street. Sunday morning is the easiest time to get right to the door on the busier corners.

The old warehouses

The converted warehouses have deep floor plates, so flats can be long and narrow with corridors that turn twice before you reach the living room. Ceilings are high and windows are big, which means wardrobes and sofas that went in through a window on the original fit-out sometimes need dismantling on the way out. We bring tools and take our time.

Merchant City to anywhere

From Glasgow Cross you are a few minutes from the M8 at Charing Cross or the Kingston Bridge, and the M74 at Polmadie for the Southside. That makes Merchant City a straightforward departure point, whether you are heading to Dennistoun over the road or out to East Kilbride, and it keeps the driving part of your quote low.

Typical Merchant City properties

  • Converted warehouse apartments on Bell Street, Wilson Street and Albion Street with lifts and concierge
  • Flats in the former Sheriff Court and the Italian Centre on Ingram Street
  • New-build blocks around Candleriggs, Brunswick Street and Blackfriars Street
  • Duplex and loft-style flats with mezzanines in the older conversions
  • Studios and one-beds above the bars and restaurants on Merchant Square and Trongate

What to plan for

  • Fob-controlled entrances and concierge lift bookings that have to be arranged in advance
  • One-way sections of Ingram Street and cobbled, partly pedestrianised Candleriggs and Wilson Street
  • Bus routes on Glassford Street, High Street and Trongate with no stopping in the lanes
  • Long internal corridors and mezzanine stairs in warehouse conversions
  • Weekend crowds around Merchant Square and the bars from midday onwards

FAQ

Moving in Merchant City: your questions

Do you need to book the lift in my Merchant City block?
In most of them, yes. The factors and concierges for the Bell Street and Candleriggs blocks usually want a booking and sometimes a move-in deposit for the lift. We will ask you for the factor's details at quote stage and sort the booking so the lift is padded and held for us on the day.
Where will the van park for a flat on Ingram Street?
Ingram Street itself is one way with limited kerb, so for most Ingram Street flats we load from a side street such as Hutcheson Street or Brunswick Street, or from the rear entrance if the block has one. Where a long carry would be needed we apply to Glasgow City Council for a bay suspension instead. Peter will tell you which applies.
Can you move me out of the Merchant City on a Saturday?
Yes, and a Saturday morning start works well. By early afternoon the streets around Merchant Square and Candleriggs fill with visitors, so we aim to be loaded and gone before then. Sundays are quieter again for the whole day if your dates allow.
Are the Merchant City flats hard to get furniture out of?
The warehouse conversions can be. Corridors turn, some flats have internal stairs to a mezzanine, and window-fitted furniture from the original sale sometimes has to be dismantled. None of that is a problem if we know in advance, so send Peter a few photos of the awkward pieces and the hallway with your enquiry.
Do you cover student and short-let flats in the Merchant City?
We do. Studios and one-beds near Strathclyde University and around Trongate are a regular man and van job for us, often at the end of a lease with a tight handover time. A one-bed from a Merchant City block starts from £200 and usually takes a morning.
