Removals in Glasgow's West End

Byres Road to Broomhill, Kelvinbridge to Kelvinside: a local removals crew that knows every close, crescent and controlled parking zone in the West End.

Byres Road and the sandstone tenements of Glasgow's West End

The West End is where Clyde Movers does most of its work. Between Great Western Road and the river, and from Charing Cross out to Anniesland, you have tenements in Partick and Hillhead, red sandstone in Hyndland, the grand terraces of Kelvinside and Dowanhill, and the newer blocks at Glasgow Harbour and Finnieston. Removals in the West End cover all of that, and each district has its own page with street-level detail.

Two things shape almost every West End move: stairs and parking. The tenements are four storeys without lifts, and most of the streets from Hillhead through Dowanhill to Hyndland and Partick are inside Glasgow City Council's controlled parking zones. Byres Road, Great Western Road, Dumbarton Road and Crow Road are all bus routes. Knowing which side street to load from, and when to apply for a bay suspension, is what turns a long day into a short one.

We are a West End removal company in the practical sense: our crews are on these streets every week, moving students in September, families between tenements and villas, and downsizers out to Bearsden and Milngavie. Call Peter with the address and he will give you a firm price.

Moving in West End: what we know

The controlled parking zones

Hillhead, Dowanhill, Hyndland, Partick, Woodlands and the Park District each have their own permit zone, most of them running through the working day on weekdays and some on Saturdays too. Enforcement is regular. For a full flat move we generally arrange a bay suspension through Glasgow City Council, which needs a few days' notice, and for a smaller move an early start and a short carry does the job.

Terraces and villas on Great Western Road

West of Kelvinbridge, Great Western Road is lined with listed terraces such as Grosvenor Terrace and Kirklee Terrace, and behind them Kelvinside and Dowanhill have detached and semi-detached villas on Cleveden Road, Athole Gardens and Victoria Crescent. Many are split into very large flats with high ceilings and wide staircases. The furniture is bigger, the carries are longer and the driveways, where they exist, are often gravel.

Byres Road and the lanes

Byres Road is the West End's main street and a bus route with short-stay bays, so we rarely load from it directly. Behind it, Ashton Lane, Cresswell Lane and Ruthven Lane are cobbled and closed to vehicles for much of the day. We use the side streets and carry, and we tell you in advance when a lane address is going to take longer.

Getting in and out

The West End is well placed for onward travel. The Clyde Tunnel at Thornwood serves the Southside and the airport, the Clydeside Expressway and Charing Cross put you on the M8, and the Switchback Road from Anniesland runs straight to Bearsden and Milngavie. Most West End moves, even ones that cross the city, spend far more time loading than driving.

Typical West End properties

  • Four-storey sandstone tenements throughout Partick, Hillhead, Hyndland, Dowanhill and Woodlands
  • Listed terraces along Great Western Road including Grosvenor Terrace and Kirklee Terrace
  • Victorian villas and converted mansions in Kelvinside, Dowanhill and Kelvindale
  • Student flats and residences around the University of Glasgow and Byres Road
  • Modern apartment blocks at Glasgow Harbour, Finnieston and along the Kelvin

What to plan for

  • Permit-only parking across several separate controlled zones with different hours
  • Bus lanes on Byres Road, Great Western Road, Dumbarton Road and Crow Road
  • Tenement stairs with no lifts and tight half landings
  • Cobbled, vehicle-free lanes behind Byres Road
  • September student turnover, when hundreds of moves land in the same fortnight

FAQ

Moving in West End: your questions

Which parts of the West End have permit parking?
Most of the residential streets between Charing Cross and Hyndland do, including Hillhead, Dowanhill, Hyndland, Partick, Woodlands and the Park District. Each is its own zone with its own hours. Peter will check your street when he quotes and tell you whether we should apply to Glasgow City Council for a bay suspension or simply arrange an early start.
Do you move students at the start and end of term?
Yes, and those are our busiest weeks. Late June and the second half of September are booked up early, particularly around Hillhead and Kelvinbridge. If you know your lease dates, get in touch a few weeks ahead. Single-room moves between shared flats are priced below a full one-bed.
Can you move a large flat from a Great Western Road terrace?
We can, and we plan it as a bigger job. The terrace flats have very tall furniture, long carries from the front door to the kerb and often a shared entrance to protect. We send a larger crew, allow more time and, where the terrace has a service lane behind it, use that for loading rather than the main road.
Do you cover moves from the West End to Bearsden and Milngavie?
Every week. The Switchback Road from Anniesland Cross puts Bearsden Cross about fifteen minutes away and Milngavie a few minutes beyond that outside the rush hour. Because the drive is short, a tenement-to-house move from the West End to East Dunbartonshire is usually a single day even for a three-bed.
What is the difference between a man and van and a full removal in the West End?
Size and crew. A man and van suits a studio, a single room or a short hop between flats, with one vehicle and one or two people. A full removal brings a Luton and a crew sized for the stairs, plus packing if you want it. Tell Peter what you have and he will say honestly which you need and what it will cost.
