Pollokshields Removals

From Maxwell Park villas to Albert Drive tenements, moved with the care big houses and old stone stairs deserve.

Victorian villas on a tree-lined avenue beside Maxwell Park, Pollokshields

Pollokshields is really two places. West of Shields Road you have the Maxwell Park conservation area, with detached Victorian villas on Springkell Avenue, Sherbrooke Avenue, Terregles Avenue and Dalziel Drive, set back behind hedges and gravel drives. East of it, around Albert Drive, Kenmure Street, Maxwell Road and Forth Street, the streets are dense sandstone tenements with shops beneath and a lot of larger families living above.

Removals in Pollokshields therefore range from a one-bed flat above Albert Drive to a six-bedroom villa with a piano, a full attic and a cellar. The villas are the jobs that take planning: wide drives mean we can get the van right to the door, but the houses have turning staircases, heavy period doors and rooms full of solid furniture that needs proper blanket wrapping and two people on every piece.

If you want movers in Pollokshields who will actually look at the house before pricing it, Peter is happy to visit. A Pollokshields removal company that quotes a villa from a phone call is guessing, and guessing is how moves overrun.

Moving in Pollokshields: what we know

The Maxwell Park conservation area

The villas around Maxwell Park, on Springkell Avenue, Sherbrooke Avenue, St Andrew's Drive and Dalziel Drive, were built for Glasgow's merchant families and still have the proportions to prove it. Long gravel driveways and wide gateposts let a Luton van reverse right up to the front steps, which saves hours on a big house. Inside, expect two or three flights of stairs, high skirting and plaster cornices we protect with corner guards before wardrobes move.

Tenements around Albert Drive and Kenmure Street

East Pollokshields is a busy, tightly packed grid of three and four-storey tenements. Albert Drive, Maxwell Road and Kenmure Street have shops at street level and flats above, often with a long straight close and a steep stair. Parking is the challenge here rather than the stairs: the streets are narrow, double parked at school run time, and Albert Drive is a bus route. We time arrival for early morning and work from the nearest side street such as Leslie Street or Forth Street.

Pollokshields, Maxwell Park and Shields Road stations

The Cathcart Circle and the Paisley Canal line both cut through Pollokshields, with stations at Maxwell Park, Pollokshields West, Pollokshields East and Shields Road. The railway bridges on Terregles Avenue and Shields Road are fine for our vans, but the residential streets near Maxwell Park station are single-lane where cars park on both sides. On tight streets we drop the crew first and bring the van in once we know there is room to turn.

Access from the M77 and the M8

Pollokshields sits right beside Junction 1 of the M77 at Dumbreck, so from the Kingston Bridge it is under ten minutes to Nithsdale Road on a clear morning. Moves to the West End go back over the bridge or through the Clyde Tunnel via Paisley Road West. Heading to Giffnock or Newton Mearns, it is straight down the M77. Paisley and Renfrew are a short run along the M8 to Junction 27.

Typical Pollokshields properties

  • Detached Victorian villas on Springkell Avenue and Sherbrooke Avenue
  • Large semi-detached houses on Terregles Avenue and Dalziel Drive
  • Red sandstone tenement flats on Albert Drive, Kenmure Street and Maxwell Road
  • Converted flats within villas near Maxwell Park
  • Modern townhouses off St Andrew's Drive

What to plan for

  • Very large houses with pianos, antiques and full attics
  • Turning staircases and period features that need protecting
  • Narrow, double-parked streets in East Pollokshields at school times
  • Bus route restrictions on Albert Drive and Shields Road
  • Gravel drives and low gateposts that need a careful reverse

FAQ

Moving in Pollokshields: your questions

Do you move pianos from Pollokshields villas?
Yes, upright pianos are part of a normal house move for us and we bring the right crew and equipment. Grand pianos are a specialist lift and Peter will tell you whether it needs a separate piano team once he knows the model and where it sits in the house.
Will you visit before quoting a large house?
For anything above a two-bed we prefer to. A Maxwell Park villa can have twice the contents of a similar-sized house elsewhere, so a quick walk round with Peter means the crew, the van size and the time are right on the day rather than a surprise.
What about parking for an Albert Drive flat?
Albert Drive is busy and has bus stops, so the van usually sits on a side street like Leslie Street or Maxwell Road. An early start avoids the school run. If your close is on a stretch with no realistic gap, a bay suspension from Glasgow City Council takes about a fortnight to arrange.
Can you store furniture between a sale and a purchase in Pollokshields?
We can arrange short-term storage if your dates do not line up, which is common with chains involving larger Southside houses. Tell Peter the gap between entry dates and he will price the storage and the two-part move together.
How much does a move in Pollokshields cost?
Flat moves start from £200 for a one-bed and £300 for a two-bed. Three-bed homes start from £500, and the big villas are priced individually after a visit. The guide prices cover van, crew and the standard protection for your furniture.
