Removals in Bearsden

Detached villas, long driveways and family-sized moves from Bearsden Cross to Westerton, Kilmardinny and Mosshead.

Detached villas and mature gardens on Drymen Road in Bearsden

Bearsden is house-move country. The streets off Drymen Road, Roman Road and Milngavie Road are lined with detached 1930s villas, Victorian houses near Bearsden Cross, and later estates at Kilmardinny, Mosshead and Killermont with driveways, garages and gardens front and back. Removals in Bearsden tend to be bigger than the tenement moves we do in the West End: more rooms, more loft, and a garage that has been filling up for twenty years.

The good news is access. Most Bearsden houses have a driveway the van can use, so there is no permit or bay suspension to worry about, and the roads are wide. The things that do bite are the Switchback Road and Canniesburn Toll at rush hour, steep or gravelled driveways in Mosshead and Kilmardinny, and gateposts set closer together than a Luton would like. Where the van cannot get onto the drive we park on the road, which is unrestricted on most Bearsden streets.

As a Bearsden removal company we regularly move families in from Hyndland and Jordanhill, downsizers out to Milngavie. Give Peter a ring, describe the house and roughly what is in it, and he will give you a firm price for the day.

Moving in Bearsden: what we know

Driveways, gateposts and gravel

A Bearsden driveway looks simple until you try to reverse a Luton up it. The older villas on Roman Road and Ledcameroch Road have stone gateposts set for a 1930s car, and many drives in Mosshead and Kilmardinny climb steeply or are laid in loose gravel. We check the approach before the day, and where the van stays on the road we use long ramps and trolleys so the carry does not slow the crew down.

Westerton and the garden suburb

Westerton, at the southern end of Bearsden, was laid out as a garden suburb with semi-detached and terraced cottages on Maxwell Avenue and the streets around Westerton station. The roads are narrower than the rest of Bearsden and the houses have small front gardens and side paths rather than big drives, so we plan for street parking and a short carry rather than assuming the van can pull in.

The Switchback and Canniesburn Toll

Almost every route between Bearsden and the city crosses Canniesburn Toll or runs down the Switchback Road to Anniesland. Both queue heavily from 7.30 to 9.15 and from 4 to 6.30. We time the drive to avoid them, which often means loading first thing and travelling mid-morning, or using Maryhill Road and the Boclair side as an alternative when the Switchback is slow.

Lofts, garages and garden sheds

The typical Bearsden three or four-bed has been lived in for a long time, and the volume is in the loft, the garage and the shed rather than the rooms. We ask about all three when we quote, because it is what decides whether the job is one van load or two. If you would rather clear some of it beforehand, say so and we will price the move with and without it.

FAQ

Moving in Bearsden: your questions

Will the van fit up my driveway in Bearsden?
Often yes, but not always. Older villas on Roman Road and around Bearsden Cross have gateposts that are tight for a Luton, and steep gravel drives in Mosshead can be hard to reverse up when loaded. Send Peter a photo of the drive from the road and he will tell you whether we park on it or on the street.
Do we need a parking permit or suspension for a Bearsden move?
Almost never. Most Bearsden streets have no parking restrictions, so the van can sit on the road outside if the driveway is not usable. The exceptions are near Bearsden Cross and the stations, where there are short-stay bays. If a suspension were ever needed it would be through East Dunbartonshire Council, and we would arrange it.
How long does a three-bed house move within Bearsden take?
A typical three-bed with a loft and garage is a full day for a three-person crew, sometimes with a second run. A move within Bearsden or to Milngavie keeps the driving to minutes, so the day is all packing, loading and unloading. Three-bed moves start from £500 and Peter will give you a fixed figure once he knows what is in the house.
Can you help with packing for a big family move in Bearsden?
Yes. We can pack the whole house or just the kitchen and the fragile items, supply boxes and paper, and dismantle beds, wardrobes and garden furniture. For a big Bearsden villa we would normally suggest packing the day before the move so moving day itself is just loading and driving.
What is the best time to move out of Bearsden to the city?
Load first thing and travel between 9.30 and 3.30, when the Switchback Road and Canniesburn Toll are free-flowing. Bearsden Cross to the West End is about fifteen minutes in that window, and the city centre around twenty-five. We plan the day around it so you are not paying for a crew sat in a queue at Anniesland.
