Removals in Rutherglen

From Main Street closes to Burnside's sandstone villas, house and flat moves across G73 with the parking already thought about.

Rutherglen Main Street looking towards the old town hall clock tower

Rutherglen is a royal burgh with a long Main Street, a cluster of tenements around it and, up the hill, the leafy streets of Burnside and Stonelaw where red sandstone villas and big terraced houses sit behind hedges on Blairbeth Road, Stonelaw Road and Broomieknowe. Beyond that are the post-war estates of Fernhill, Spittal and Cathkin, and along the Clyde the newer flats at Farme Cross and Shawfield. It is a compact town but the property could hardly be more varied.

Removals in Rutherglen split into two jobs. Around Main Street, King Street and Mill Street the work is tenement closes, pend access and finding a gap for the van on a street that doubles as the town's bus route. Up in Burnside the challenge is volume: a four-bedroom villa on Stonelaw Road holds a lot of furniture and often has a steep drive, a gravel path and a heavy storm door.

As a Rutherglen removal company we are a short hop from town, either over the Dalmarnock Bridge or out the M74 to Junction 2, in around 15 minutes. Phone Peter with the street and he will know what to bring.

Moving in Rutherglen: what we know

Main Street, the Exchange and the old burgh

Rutherglen Main Street is wide by Glasgow standards, with the old town hall at one end and the Exchange shopping centre halfway along. The tenements on Main Street, King Street and Queen Street are three storeys with closes that open straight onto the pavement. Bus stops and loading bays take up much of the kerb, so we work from Greenhill Road, Farmeloan Road or the streets behind the Exchange and keep the carry short. The flats above the shops often have a separate close door round the side.

Burnside and Stonelaw villas

Blairbeth Road, Stonelaw Road, Broomieknowe, Dalziel Drive and the streets around Burnside station are red sandstone villas and substantial semis from the 1890s to the 1920s, many with attic rooms, cellars and deep bay windows. Drives are short and often on a slope, paths are gravel and the front doors are heavy storm doors with a vestibule. We bring extra crew for these, cover the stair carpets and plan the piano or the American fridge before anything else moves.

Fernhill, Spittal, Cathkin and Cambuslang Road

South of Burnside the ground rises into Fernhill and Cathkin, with council-built terraces, four-in-a-blocks and the newer estates towards Cathkin Braes. Spittal and Croftfoot have 1930s semis on wide streets where parking is simple. The hills matter: some streets in Fernhill are steep enough that we park the van pointing uphill and shuttle with the sack truck. Along Cambuslang Road and at Farme Cross the modern flats have gated car parks that need the factor's help for van access.

Trains, bridges and the M74

Rutherglen, Burnside and Croftfoot stations are all on lines into Central, which is why so many of our jobs here are renters and first-time buyers moving between here and the city. For the van, the Dalmarnock Bridge and Shawfield are quickest from the East End, while the M74 Junction 2 at Cambuslang Road serves Burnside and Fernhill. The Rutherglen bypass and Cathcart Road get congested around 5pm so we aim to be unloading by then.

Typical Rutherglen properties

  • Three-storey tenement flats on Main Street, King Street and Queen Street
  • Red sandstone villas and large semis in Burnside and Stonelaw
  • 1930s semis and terraces in Spittal, Croftfoot and around Burnside station
  • Four-in-a-block flats and council terraces in Fernhill and Cathkin
  • Modern apartment blocks at Farme Cross, Shawfield and Cambuslang Road

What to plan for

  • Bus stops and loading bays taking most of the kerb on Main Street
  • Steep drives, gravel paths and storm doors on Burnside villas
  • Hill streets in Fernhill where the van needs to sit uphill
  • Gated car parks on the newer flats needing factor access
  • Evening congestion on Cathcart Road and the Rutherglen bypass

FAQ

Moving in Rutherglen: your questions

Can you move a piano out of a Burnside villa?
Yes, as long as we know about it in advance. Upright pianos are common in the Stonelaw and Blairbeth Road houses and they need a piano trolley, straps and three crew for the storm door step and the drive. Tell Peter when you book and he will price it in rather than surprise you on the day.
Is parking a problem on Rutherglen Main Street?
It can be. The kerb is mostly bus stops and short-stay bays, and traffic wardens are active. We plan to sit on the nearest side street and carry, or Peter can advise on a temporary bay suspension from South Lanarkshire Council if your close is on a busy stretch and the move is a big one.
How long does a move from Rutherglen to the West End take?
A typical two-bed flat is loaded in a couple of hours, and the drive over the Dalmarnock Bridge and through the city or round the M74 and Clydeside Expressway is 25 to 35 minutes depending on the time. Most Rutherglen to West End moves are finished comfortably in an afternoon.
Do you do small moves within Rutherglen itself?
All the time. A lot of local work is a one-bed on Main Street moving up to a bigger flat in Burnside, or a parent downsizing from Cathkin into a modern flat at Farme Cross. A man and van crew of two is usually enough and Peter will suggest that where it fits.
What do I do about the hill on my Fernhill street?
Nothing, that is our job. We park the van facing uphill with the ramp on the level side, chock it and use a sack truck for the heavy items. If the street is too steep or too narrow for the Luton we drop a smaller van at the door and shuttle to the big one.
