Typical job

Same day

Perth is the point where a Glasgow move stops being a quick hop and becomes a proper day's work. It is about 62 miles by road and an hour and a half in a loaded van. Removals Glasgow to Perth is a run we do comfortably in a day: loaded in Glasgow in the morning, up the M80 and the A9 around midday, unloaded in Perth in the afternoon.

Perth has a particular kind of housing that catches people out. The Georgian terraces around the North Inch, on Atholl Crescent, Rose Terrace and Barossa Place, are tall, with long straight stairs and sash windows that cost more to replace than a sofa. Craigie has solid Victorian villas and terraces on the slope south of the centre. Bridgend sits across Smeaton's old bridge on the east bank of the Tay, with a narrow Main Street and lanes climbing towards Kinnoull Hill. Scone is a village of its own with modern estates and easy parking. Peter looks at the exact address before he prices the job, because a top floor flat on Rose Terrace and a new build at Scone are two different days.

The High Street and St John Street are pedestrianised and Perth and Kinross Council runs the centre's parking, so a Luton needs a plan before it arrives rather than a hopeful circuit of the one way system. We sort that with you in advance.

The route and what shapes the day

M80, M9 and then the A9

From Glasgow we take the M80 north past Cumbernauld to the M9 at Pirnhall, stay on the M9 round the south of Stirling to junction 11 at Keir, and join the A9 there. The A9 is dual carriageway all the way to Perth, past Dunblane, Blackford, Auchterarder and the Gleneagles junction, and brings us to Broxden roundabout on the south west edge of the city. From Broxden the A93 Glasgow Road runs straight into the centre and Craigie, the A9 continues round the bypass to Inveralmond for the north side and the road out to Scone, and the M90 across the Friarton Bridge is the way into Bridgend and Kinnoull. Allow 1 h 20 min to 1 h 40 min with a load on.

Where the delays are

The M80 has its commuter peaks around Cumbernauld, and the Pirnhall and Keir roundabouts both queue when Stirling traffic is heavy. Once on the A9 the run is quick. Broxden is the junction to watch: everything from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and the north meets there, and it is slow between 08:00 and 09:30 and again from 16:30. We time the day to arrive in Perth early afternoon, between the peaks. Summer weekends bring caravan traffic north on the A9, so Friday and Saturday moves in July and August get an extra half hour in the plan.

Winter and weather on the A9

The A9 between Dunblane and Perth crosses open ground at Blackford and Gleneagles that catches snow and drifting before the lower stretches do, and the M80 over Castlecary is the same. The streets along the Tay in Perth flood occasionally when the river is high, and the council closes the Tay Street and North Inch car parks when it does. Between November and March we check the forecast and Traffic Scotland the night before, leave Glasgow a little earlier, and keep a buffer in the day.

Breaks and the last mile

An hour and a half in the van is under the point where we need a scheduled stop. In Perth itself we pick the approach for the postcode. The Georgian streets round the North Inch are reached from Atholl Street and Charlotte Street. Craigie is off the Glasgow Road and Queen Street. Bridgend is across Perth Bridge from Charlotte Street, and the Main Street there is narrow enough that we often leave the Luton on the main road and work from a short carry.

Arriving in Perth

  • The Georgian terraces around the North Inch, on Atholl Crescent, Rose Terrace, Barossa Place and the streets behind them, are tall buildings with long stairs and original sash windows. Measure your biggest pieces and tell us the width of the tightest turn so we send the right crew.
  • Perth High Street and St John Street are pedestrianised and the surrounding streets are a one way loop, so a van cannot simply stop outside a flat above a shop. We arrange a loading slot or a suspended bay through Perth and Kinross Council and plan the carry from the nearest point we can legally stop.
  • Bridgend's Main Street and the lanes up towards Kinnoull Hill are narrow with parked cars, and a Luton does not fit comfortably. We often work from a bay on the main road with a short carry, and we warn you about it in the quote rather than on the day.
  • Craigie has Victorian terraces and villas on a slope, with some front gardens up a flight of steps from the pavement. Steps and a long path add time, so let Peter know if your house is one of those.
  • Scone, Oakbank, Letham and the new estates on the western edge are modern housing with driveways, and the van parks at the door.

How it works

Moving from Glasgow to Perth, step by step

  1. Quote from a walk-through

Send Peter a short video of your Glasgow home on WhatsApp or book a visit. He confirms the volume, checks the stair and the parking at your Glasgow address, and looks at the Perth property to work out the carry and whether the street takes a Luton. The fixed written price covers the crew, the van, fuel and the whole drive. He will also ask about sheds, lofts and garden furniture, which are the things people forget to mention.

  2. Plan parking and keys

If your Perth address is in the city centre or one of the residents' zones around the Inches or Craigie, we tell you how to ask Perth and Kinross Council for a bay suspension and how many bays the van needs. New estates in Scone, Oakbank and on the western edge rarely need anything. Because the van is an hour and a half from Glasgow, we also agree a plan for late keys: the loaded van waits in Perth, not in Glasgow.

  3. Load in Glasgow

The crew arrives from 08:00, protects the close and door frames, and loads the heavy pieces first with boxes packed round them. Everything is blanket wrapped and strapped because it has 62 miles of motorway and dual carriageway ahead of it. A two bed flat is usually on the M80 within two to three hours, and a three bed house by midday.

  4. Unload in Perth

We arrive early afternoon, put the van on the bay we agreed, and carry everything to the rooms you have named. Beds go up first, then the kitchen and the sofa, so the house works that night. We take flattened boxes away if you want them gone.

FAQ

Glasgow to Perth questions

Can you move us from Glasgow to Perth in one day?
Yes, almost always. The drive is about an hour and a half each way, which leaves plenty of time to load in the morning and unload in the afternoon. We only split a move over two days for very large houses, for a late key release that runs into the evening, or when you ask us to.
Do you need parking permits in Perth?
In the city centre and the residents' zones around the North Inch, South Inch and Craigie, yes. Perth and Kinross Council suspends bays with around a week's notice and we tell you what to ask for. Bridgend's Main Street usually means a short carry from a legal bay instead. Scone and the estates on the edge of the city rarely need anything.
What if our Perth keys are late?
We plan for it. The loaded van waits in Perth, so once your solicitor calls we are minutes away rather than an hour and a half down the A9. If the delay runs into the evening we can hold your things securely overnight and unload first thing, at a cost agreed before we leave Glasgow.
Is everything insured on the drive up the A9?
Goods in transit cover is available for the whole move from your Glasgow door to your Perth door, and Peter explains the level of cover and any excess when he quotes. Everything is wrapped and strapped so nothing moves on the dual carriageway in the first place.
Can you collect from a storage unit on the way?
Yes. We often pick up from a storage unit on the north side of Glasgow or in Cumbernauld on the way to the M9, or from a second Glasgow address. Tell Peter when you book so the loading order and the timings are planned properly and the extra stop is in the fixed quote.
