If you have any say over your moving date, use it. The day of the week, the point in the month and the time of year all change how easy it is to book a crew, how much you pay and how smoothly the day goes. We look at our diary every week and the patterns are remarkably consistent, so here is what we would tell a friend.
Day of the week
Friday is the most requested moving day in Glasgow by a distance. People want the weekend to unpack, and many dates of entry fall on a Friday because solicitors and lenders like to settle before the weekend.
The problem is that everyone thinks the same way. Fridays are the first to fill, prices are firmest, the roads are busiest and if key release is delayed there is no next working day to fall back on until Monday.
| Day | Demand | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Medium | Good availability, fresh crew |
| Tuesday | Low | Often the easiest day to book |
| Wednesday | Low | Same as Tuesday |
| Thursday | Medium | Fills as people avoid Friday |
| Friday | Very high | Book weeks ahead, no fallback if keys are late |
| Saturday | High | Popular for renters; no solicitors working |
| Sunday | Low to medium | Quiet roads, limited key handovers |
A Tuesday or Wednesday move, if your dates allow it, is usually the best value and the calmest.
Time of the month
The last few days of the month and the first are busy for the same reason: tenancies start and end on the 1st, and many purchases are timed to month-end. If you are renting, ask the letting agent whether the tenancy can start on, say, the 8th. Many will agree if the property is empty. If you are buying, talk to your solicitor early about a date of entry away from the month-end rush.
Time of year
Glasgow has a clear seasonal pattern.
Spring (March to May)
The market picks up, the weather is improving and the days are longer. A good time to move. Easter weekend and the May bank holidays are busier, so avoid those specific days.
Summer (June to August)
The busiest season. School is out, families want to move before the new term, and student tenancies turn over. Two Glasgow-specific dates matter here:
- The Glasgow Fair. The traditional trades holiday falls in the second half of July, with the Fair Monday a local public holiday. Some businesses close, roads out of the city are busy and a lot of people are away. It is not a bad time to move if you are here, but book early.
- School holidays. Glasgow schools break up in late June and return in mid August. The fortnight before the return is busy with family moves.
Autumn (September to November)
September is hectic for student moves in the West End and city centre. From October onwards things settle, the weather is still workable and there is good availability. Many people consider October and early November the sweet spot.
Winter (December to February)
The quietest period, with the exception of the last week before Christmas when everyone wants to be in for the holidays. January and February are cheap and easy to book. The trade-off is short days, cold, and the chance of ice or snow. A winter move is perfectly doable, it just needs an early start and a plan for the weather.
Weather
We move in the rain. Everyone in Glasgow does. But it does affect the day:
- Wet weather slows loading because everything needs wrapping and the crew is careful on wet steps.
- Wind is more disruptive than rain for large flat items like mattresses and mirrors.
- Ice on a tenement stair is a genuine hazard and can delay a start.
- Heat is rarely the problem in Glasgow, though a top-floor flat in July gets warm.
Check the forecast the week before and have mattress bags and plastic sheeting ready. Our packing guide has wet-weather tips.
Time of day
Morning starts are best. The crew is fresh, the roads are quieter after the school run, and there is slack in the day if something goes wrong. For a move where you are waiting on keys, we often load in the morning, break, and unload once the solicitor confirms. Afternoon-only moves work for small flats but leave no room for delays.
Money and dates
Prices are firmer when demand is high and softer when it is low. Without giving a false precision, moving on a midweek day in the middle of the month, outside the summer, will usually get you the best price and the widest choice of times. The busiest slots, a Friday at the end of July, cost more and need to be booked much earlier. Our price guide explains the factors.
How far ahead to book
| Move date | Book at least |
|---|---|
| Midweek, quiet month | 1 to 2 weeks ahead |
| Friday or Saturday, quiet month | 3 to 4 weeks ahead |
| Any day, June to September | 4 to 6 weeks ahead |
| Month-end Friday in summer | 6 weeks or more |
| Week before Christmas | As soon as you know |
If your date is uncertain because you are waiting on missives, tell us. We can pencil you in and firm it up when the date of entry is confirmed.
If you cannot choose the date
Plenty of people cannot. The date of entry is fixed, the landlord wants you out on the 31st, or the new job starts on Monday. In that case:
- Book the moment the date is known.
- Be packed and ready so the crew's time is used well.
- Sort parking in advance, because busy days mean busy streets.
- Confirm key release times with your solicitor or agent to avoid paid waiting time.
- Have a fallback plan if keys are late, such as the crew holding your goods overnight.
