Typical job
Same day
Ayr is the easiest long run we do. Removals Glasgow to Ayr take about an hour down the M77 and the A77, so we load in Glasgow in the morning and have you unpacking by the sea in the early afternoon. Clyde Movers makes the trip most weeks, for families trading a Southside flat for a garden in Alloway, couples heading for a bungalow in Doonfoot, and plenty of people simply going home to Ayrshire after years in the city.
The town is a mix of buildings that each move differently. The Victorian villas along Racecourse Road and behind the Low Green are big, with wide doors, long paths and sometimes a basement. The tenements in the town centre and over the river in Newton have close stairs much like Glasgow’s, with the same half-landing turns. Forehill and the estates out towards the bypass are post-war semis with driveways, and Alloway is detached houses with gravel and gates. Peter looks at both ends of the job before he prices it, so the crew arrives with the right van and enough hands.
Parking is the thing most people forget until the morning of the move. The pedestrianised High Street, the one-way streets around the Sandgate and the seafront in summer all need a bit of planning, and South Ayrshire Council can suspend a bay if you ask in time. We tell you what to apply for, and when, so the van is at the door rather than round the corner.
The route and what shapes the day
The M77 and A77 straight through
From the city centre we join the M8 westbound and pick up the M77 at junction 22, then run out past Pollok, Silverburn and Newton Mearns. The motorway ends just beyond Fenwick and becomes the A77, which stays dual carriageway through the Bellfield interchange at Kilmarnock, past Prestwick Airport at the Dutch House roundabout, and down to the Whitletts roundabout on the edge of Ayr. It is about 37 miles door to door, and a loaded Luton does it in a little under an hour on a clear morning without ever leaving a dual carriageway.
Whitletts and the way into town
Whitletts roundabout is where we choose the approach. The A719 Whitletts Road runs straight into the town centre and across to Newton, which suits most tenement and town centre jobs. For Alloway, Doonfoot and the south side of town we stay on the bypass round to Holmston and come in from there. Racecourse Road, Wellington Square and the seafront villas are reached through the town, and in summer the Low Green area fills with day visitors from late morning, so on those jobs we aim to have the van outside the door before eleven.
Fenwick Moor in winter
The M77 climbs over Fenwick Moor between Newton Mearns and Kilmarnock, and it is the exposed stretch that catches snow, ice and fog before anywhere else on the route. The gritters are usually out ahead of it, but drifting snow or a lorry across the carriageway can close it for a few hours. Between December and February we check the road before we leave and, if we have to, come down the A736 through Barrhead and Lugton or cut across on the A71, which adds about twenty minutes rather than a day.
Timing the run
The M77 is slow outbound from Glasgow between 16:00 and 18:00, and the A77 around Kilmarnock and Prestwick bunches up on Friday afternoons and on race days at Ayr Racecourse. We load in the morning and have the van on the motorway by late morning, which is the quietest window. Under an hour on the road means no scheduled stop; the crew will take their break at the Ayr end once the van is parked if they have been loading since early.
Arriving in Ayr
- Apply to South Ayrshire Council for a parking bay suspension at least seven days ahead if you are moving into the town centre, Newton, Wellington Square or the streets around the Sandgate; the pedestrianised High Street has loading restrictions, so a flat above a shop there needs an early slot agreed in advance.
- The seafront streets behind the Low Green and the Esplanade fill with visitors’ cars from mid-morning between May and September, so a summer move into a seafront villa or flat needs the van at the door before eleven or a suspended bay.
- Town centre and Newton tenement closes have narrow half-landing turns much like Glasgow’s, so measure sofas and wardrobes and tell us the width of the tightest turn before the day.
- Alloway and Doonfoot houses often have gravel drives, gateposts and a long walk to the front door, so check whether a Luton will fit through the gate; if not we park on the road and the carry is priced in rather than sprung on you.
- Ayr Racecourse meetings, especially the Scottish Grand National in April and the Gold Cup in September, fill Racecourse Road and Whitletts Road with traffic and parked cars, so if your date falls on a race day we plan around it.
How it works
Moving from Glasgow to Ayr, step by step
Quote from a walk-through
Send Peter a short video of your Glasgow home on WhatsApp, or book a visit. He confirms the volume, checks the floors, stairs and parking at both addresses, and sends a fixed written price for the whole job. That figure covers the crew, the van, fuel and the drive down the A77, so there is nothing to add on the day.
Sort the Ayr parking
If you are moving into the town centre, a Newton tenement or one of the seafront streets, we tell you to apply to South Ayrshire Council for a bay suspension and to give it at least a week. For Alloway, Doonfoot and Forehill it is usually a driveway and a word with the neighbours. Pack ahead or book our packers, and keep keys, documents and chargers in a bag that travels with you.
Load in Glasgow
The crew arrives from 08:00, protects the close and the door frames, and loads the heavy furniture first with boxes packed around it. Sofas and mattresses are wrapped before they touch the stair. Most flats are loaded and on the M77 within two to three hours, which puts us at Whitletts before the lunchtime traffic.
Unload in Ayr
We arrive early afternoon, put the van on the suspended bay or the driveway, and carry everything to the rooms you name. Beds are rebuilt first so you can sleep that night. We take the flattened boxes away if you want them gone and check the van together before leaving.
