Typical job
Same day
Troon sits on its own point of the Ayrshire coast, about 33 miles from Glasgow and under an hour down the M77 and A77. Removals Glasgow to Troon is a run we know well, for families moving for the schools and the beach, golfers who have finally bought the bungalow beside the course, and people who will commute back up to Glasgow on the train from Troon or Barassie. Clyde Movers loads in Glasgow in the morning and has the van on your drive in Troon by early afternoon.
The housing in Troon is mostly low and wide rather than tall and narrow. South Beach is Victorian and Edwardian villas facing the water, some of them split into large flats with their own front doors. Barassie to the north is bungalows and semis around the station, the streets off Dundonald Road near Marr College are solid family houses with gardens, and the harbour has newer flats around the marina. There are a few tenement closes around Templehill, Ayr Street and Portland Street in the centre, but most of the carries here are along a path and through a front door rather than up three flights.
What needs thinking about is the width of the streets and the summer crowds. The roads off South Beach are lined with parked cars, the town centre is one-way in places, and on a warm weekend half of Ayrshire comes to the beach. We plan the arrival time and the parking with you before the day so the van is where it needs to be.
The route and what shapes the day
M77, A77 and off at the Dutch House
We leave the city centre on the M8 and join the M77 at junction 22, run out past Silverburn and Newton Mearns, and carry on as the A77 beyond Fenwick. The dual carriageway takes us through the Bellfield interchange at Kilmarnock and down to the Dutch House roundabout at Monkton, beside Prestwick Airport. From there the A78 heads north towards Loans, where Dundonald Road drops into Troon, or we go through Monkton for Barassie. It is about 33 miles and around fifty minutes with a loaded van at a steady pace.
Which way into town
Troon is small enough that the last mile matters. For South Beach and the town centre we come in on Dundonald Road past Marr College and down to Ayr Street and Templehill. For Barassie we take the coast side through Monkton and come along the shore. For the harbour and marina flats it is through the centre and out along Harbour Road, which is narrow near the boatyards. We tell you the time we expect to arrive and which side of the street we need, so nothing is parked in the way.
Fenwick Moor and the coast in winter
The M77 over Fenwick Moor is the exposed stretch that catches snow and fog first, and if it closes we use the A736 through Barrhead and Lugton or the A71 from Kilmarnock instead, which adds about twenty minutes. Troon has its own winter problem: a westerly gale off the Firth of Clyde pushes hard against a high-sided van on the A78 and along the Esplanade, so on a bad day we take it slowly and keep the sea side doors shut until the van is parked.
Timing the run
The M77 is slow outbound from Glasgow between 16:00 and 18:00, and the A77 around Prestwick is busy on Friday afternoons. In summer the roads into Troon fill with beach traffic from late morning on a sunny weekend, and when the Open Championship comes to Royal Troon there are road closures and a park-and-ride across the south of the town for a fortnight. We aim to have the van on the motorway by late morning, and under an hour on the road means no scheduled stop.
Arriving in Troon
- Apply to South Ayrshire Council for a parking bay suspension at least seven days ahead for Ayr Street, Portland Street, Templehill and the streets around Troon station, where the bays are marked and commuters fill them early on weekdays.
- South Beach villas split into flats often have the upper flat reached by a shared hall or an outside stair, so measure the biggest wardrobe and tell us; the Esplanade and the streets behind it are busy with visitors’ cars in summer, so we aim to be at the door before eleven.
- The bungalows around Royal Troon, Lochgreen and Portland courses sit on quiet streets with long gravel drives and low garages, so the carry is over the lawn and through the front door rather than up a stair; a Luton usually parks on the road.
- The newer flats at the harbour and marina have lifts and undercroft parking that a removal van will not fit into, so the lift needs booking with the factor and the van parks on Harbour Road outside.
- Barassie is mostly bungalows and semis with driveways, but the streets near Barassie station are lined with commuter cars from early morning, so if the drive is tight we ask you to keep a space outside the door.
How it works
Moving from Glasgow to Troon, step by step
Quote from a walk-through
Send Peter a short video of your Glasgow home on WhatsApp, or book a visit. He confirms the volume, checks floors, stairs and parking at both addresses, and sends a fixed written price for the whole job. That figure covers the crew, the van, fuel and the drive to the coast, with nothing added on the day.
Sort the Troon parking
For the town centre, the streets near the station and any address with marked bays we tell you to apply to South Ayrshire Council for a bay suspension and to give it at least a week. South Beach villas and the golf-course bungalows usually have a driveway, but we check the width of the gate for a Luton. Pack ahead or book our packers, and keep keys, documents and chargers with you.
Load in Glasgow
The crew arrives from 08:00, protects the close and the door frames, and loads the heavy furniture first with boxes packed around it. Sofas and mattresses are wrapped before they go near the stair. Most flats are loaded and on the M77 within two to three hours, which gets us to Troon around lunchtime.
Unload in Troon
We arrive early afternoon, put the van on the drive or the suspended bay, and carry everything to the rooms you name. Beds go up first so you can sleep that night. We take the flattened boxes away if you want and check the van with you before we head back up the road.
