Removals from Glasgow to Kilmarnock
Loaded in Glasgow first thing, down the M77 over Fenwick Moor, and unpacked in Kilmarnock before the kettle has gone cold.

Distance
25 miles
Driving time
35 min to 50 min via the M77 and A77
Typical job
Same day
Kilmarnock is one of the easiest long-distance runs we do. It is about 25 miles from the city centre down the M77, under forty minutes on a clear road, and a good crew can have a two-bed flat loaded in Glasgow and unloaded in Kilmarnock before lunch. Removals Glasgow to Kilmarnock is a job we do for families priced out of the Southside who want a garden and a train line, for people following work to Crosshouse hospital or the business parks off the Bellfield interchange, and for plenty of folk coming home to Ayrshire after a few years in the city.
The town itself is more varied than people expect. There are red sandstone tenements around the Cross and the pedestrianised King Street, Victorian villas on the roads out towards Dean Castle, big council estates at Shortlees and Onthank, and the long estate of New Farm Loch on the east side that was built through the 1970s and 1980s. Each one has a different sort of access, and Peter checks it before he prices the job so the right van and the right number of hands turn up.
The drive is short enough that the move is really about the two ends rather than the road. Where the van can stop, how far the carry is, whether there is a lift or a close or a driveway, and whether East Ayrshire Council needs to know about the van. We sort that before the day so the crew can simply get on with it.
The route and what shapes the day
The M77 past Newton Mearns
From the city centre we join the M8 westbound, drop onto the M77 at the Kingston Bridge or come down through Pollokshaws and join at Darnley, then run south past Silverburn, Newton Mearns and the Malletsheugh junction. It is dual carriageway motorway all the way to Fenwick, so the loaded van sits at a steady pace and the whole run is usually 35 to 50 minutes. From the Southside and Pollok we are on the M77 in minutes, which makes a Shawlands or Giffnock to Kilmarnock move one of the quickest we offer.
Fenwick Moor in winter
Once the motorway climbs out of Newton Mearns it crosses Fenwick Moor, open high ground with nothing to break the wind. It is the first bit of road in the west of Scotland to get snow, ice and thick fog, and Traffic Scotland will sometimes drop the speed or close a lane there when the rest of Glasgow is just a bit wet. Between November and March we check the road before we leave and keep a buffer in the plan. For the rest of the year the moor is simply a nice drive with the Arran hills in front of you on a clear day.
Bellfield and the A77
The motorway becomes the A77 just past Fenwick and brings us to the Bellfield interchange on the south east edge of the town. From there it is a few minutes into the centre on the London Road, or we peel off onto the A71 for Hurlford, Crosshouse and the Irvine side. For Stewarton and Kilmaurs we leave the M77 earlier at the Fenwick junction and come in on the B roads from the north. Bellfield itself is a big roundabout system that queues at the end of the working day, so we try to arrive outside 16:30 to 18:00.
Where the time really goes
With a drive this short there is no scheduled stop and the crew goes straight from loading to unloading. What eats time is not the M77, it is a van that cannot get near the door. Kilmarnock town centre has pedestrianised streets, loading bays with time limits and some tight lanes behind King Street, so we plan the drop before we leave Glasgow. If your new house is on a new estate with a driveway, the van is unloaded as fast as it was packed.
Arriving in Kilmarnock
- Kilmarnock town centre is tightly managed by East Ayrshire Council. King Street is pedestrianised and the streets around the Cross have loading bays with time limits, so tell us the exact address and we will confirm whether a bay suspension is needed or whether we can work from a loading bay.
- The tenements around the Cross, Portland Street and the Foregate are older red sandstone with narrow closes and tight half landings, so measure sofas and wardrobes and tell us the width of the tightest turn before the day.
- New Farm Loch, Southcraig and the newer estates off the Bellfield interchange are mostly driveways and cul-de-sacs, easy for the van but with turning space that disappears once the neighbours are home, so a morning unload is best.
- Onthank, Shortlees and Bellfield are mainly four-in-a-block and terraced council stock with shared paths and short front gardens. The carry is short but the paths are narrow, so keep the route to the door clear of bins and cars.
- If you are heading to Crosshouse, Hurlford, Stewarton or Kilmaurs rather than the town itself, say so when you book. They are only a few minutes further on but the approach roads differ, and Stewarton in particular has a narrow main street where a Luton needs a sensible stopping spot.
How it works
Moving from Glasgow to Kilmarnock, step by step
Quote from a walk-through
Send Peter a short video of your Glasgow home on WhatsApp, or book a visit. He checks the volume, asks about floors, closes and parking at both addresses, and sends a fixed written price for the whole job. That one figure covers the crew, the van, fuel and the drive down. There is nothing added on the day for mileage or time.
Sort the Kilmarnock end
If you are moving into the town centre, near the Cross or on the streets around the Dick Institute, we check whether the van needs a bay suspension from East Ayrshire Council or whether a loading bay will do. For a driveway in New Farm Loch, Crosshouse or Stewarton there is usually nothing to arrange. Pack ahead or book our packers, and keep keys and documents in a bag that travels with you.
Load in Glasgow
The crew arrives from 08:00, protects the close and the door frames, and loads the heavy furniture first with boxes packed around it. Everything is blanket wrapped and strapped before the van moves. Most flats are loaded and on the M77 within two to three hours, which lands you in Kilmarnock late morning.
Unload in Kilmarnock
We put the van as close to the door as the street allows and carry everything to the rooms you name. Beds and the cot go up first, then the sofa and the kitchen boxes, so the house works that night. We take the flattened boxes away if you want them gone and check the van is empty before we head back up the M77.
