Typical job
Same day
Irvine is the shortest of our Ayrshire runs, about 28 miles and well under an hour on a good morning. Removals Glasgow to Irvine is a job we do for young families chasing a three-bed semi with a garden for the price of a Glasgow flat, for people moving back to the town they grew up in, and for commuters who have done the sums on the train from Irvine station into Central. Clyde Movers loads in Glasgow in the morning and is unloading in Irvine by lunchtime.
Irvine was Scotland’s last New Town, and most of what you see was built from the late 1960s onwards by the development corporation. Bourtreehill, Girdle Toll, Castlepark, Lawthorn and Perceton are estates of terraced, semi-detached and detached houses on winding roads and cul-de-sacs, often with footpaths and shared parking courts rather than a drive at the front door. Dreghorn and Springside are older villages that have been folded into the town, the Harbourside has the old Harbour Street cottages and newer flats beside the Maritime Museum, and Kilwinning next door has its own sandstone tenements and 1930s council semis. Peter looks at the access at both ends before he quotes, because a carry across a parking court is a different job from a driveway.
Parking is easier here than in Glasgow or Ayr, but it is not nothing. The town centre around the Rivergate and the pedestrianised Bridgegate is restricted, and the terraced streets in the New Town estates were designed for one car per house, not for a removal van and the neighbours. We work out where the van goes before the day.
The route and what shapes the day
M77, then the A71 across from Kilmarnock
We join the M8 from the city centre, pick up the M77 at junction 22 and run out past Silverburn, Newton Mearns and over Fenwick Moor. At the Bellfield interchange on the edge of Kilmarnock we leave the A77 and take the A71 west, past Crosshouse hospital and through Springside and Dreghorn into Irvine. It is about 28 miles and around forty-five minutes with a loaded van. For Harbourside and Kilwinning we sometimes stay on the A77 to the Dutch House roundabout and take the A78 up the coast instead, which is dual carriageway the whole way and brings us in on the west side of town.
The A736 and A737 alternatives
Two other roads reach Irvine and we use both. The A736 Lochlibo Road runs from Barrhead through Uplawmoor and Lugton and comes into the north of Irvine, a single carriageway that is slower but is the natural road from the Southside and avoids the M77 altogether. The A737 leaves the M8 at Paisley and goes through Johnstone, Beith and Dalry into Kilwinning, which suits collections from the West End and Renfrewshire and deliveries to Kilwinning. Each adds ten to twenty minutes over the motorway but is a useful fallback when the M77 is closed.
Fenwick Moor in winter
The M77 climbs over Fenwick Moor between Newton Mearns and Kilmarnock and it is the one stretch on this run that catches snow, ice and fog early. The gritters are usually ahead of it, but drifting snow or a lorry across the carriageway can close it for a few hours. Between December and February we check the road before we leave Glasgow, and if it is bad we go down the A736 through Lugton, which sits lower and usually stays open.
Timing the run
The M77 is slow out of Glasgow between 16:00 and 18:00 and the A71 past Crosshouse hospital bunches up at shift change in the early afternoon. In Irvine itself the roads around the Rivergate and Kilwinning Road are busiest on a Saturday lunchtime. We load in the morning and have the van on the motorway by late morning, which is the quietest window. Under an hour on the road means no scheduled stop, and the crew can take their break once the van is parked at your door.
Arriving in Irvine
- Apply to North Ayrshire Council for a parking bay suspension at least seven days ahead if you are moving into the town centre around High Street, Bank Street or East Road near the station; the Bridgegate is pedestrianised with limited loading hours, so a flat there needs a time agreed in advance.
- The New Town estates at Bourtreehill, Girdle Toll, Castlepark and Lawthorn were built with footpath access and shared parking courts, so a carry of thirty to sixty metres from the van to the door is common; tell Peter so the crew count and the price are right, and expect a Luton rather than a bigger van on the tighter cul-de-sacs.
- Harbour Street at the Harbourside is a row of old cottages with low doors and small rooms, while the newer flats beside the Maritime Museum need the lift booked with the factor; the harbour is busy with visitors on summer weekends and museum event days.
- Dreghorn and Springside sit on the A71 main road through to Kilmarnock where stopping is not allowed, so for the older cottages and terraces along it we park on the nearest side street and carry the short distance.
- Kilwinning has sandstone tenement closes on and around Main Street with the same half-landing turns as Glasgow, 1930s council semis at Pennyburn and Woodwynd, and busy commuter parking near Kilwinning station, so we check which applies before the day.
How it works
Moving from Glasgow to Irvine, step by step
Quote from a walk-through
Send Peter a short video of your Glasgow home on WhatsApp, or book a visit. He confirms the volume, checks floors, stairs and parking at both addresses, and sends a fixed written price for the whole job. That figure covers the crew, the van, fuel and the drive to Irvine, so nothing is added on the day.
Sort the Irvine parking
If you are moving into the town centre, a Harbourside flat or a Kilwinning tenement we tell you to apply to North Ayrshire Council for a bay suspension and give it a week. For the New Town estates it is a matter of finding the closest spot to your door on the parking court and asking the neighbours to leave it clear. Pack ahead or book our packers, and keep keys, documents and chargers in a bag that travels with you.
Load in Glasgow
The crew arrives from 08:00, protects the close and the door frames, and loads the heavy furniture first with boxes packed around it. Sofas and mattresses are wrapped before they touch the stair. Most flats are loaded and on the M77 within two to three hours, which gets us to Irvine around lunchtime.
Unload in Irvine
We arrive at lunchtime or just after, park as close as the street allows, and carry everything to the rooms you name. Beds are rebuilt first so you can sleep that night. We take the flattened boxes away if you want them gone and check the van together before leaving.
