Typical job

Same day

The M8 between the two cities is the busiest road in Scotland and we drive it most weeks. Removals Glasgow to Edinburgh is our most common long-distance run: close enough to do comfortably in a day, far enough that nobody wants to make two trips in a hired van. Clyde Movers loads your Glasgow flat or house in the morning, drives across, and unloads in Edinburgh the same afternoon.

Moving from Glasgow to Edinburgh usually means swapping one tenement for another. Old Town and New Town stairs are steeper and narrower than most Glasgow closes, Marchmont and Morningside flats sit three and four storeys up, and the converted warehouses in Leith have lifts that need booking with the factor. Peter checks the access at both ends before he prices the job, so the crew turns up with the right number of hands and the right van.

Parking is the other thing to get right. Most of central Edinburgh sits inside a controlled parking zone, and a removal van needs a suspended bay outside the door. We tell you what to apply for and when, so the day runs without a warden getting involved.

The route and what shapes the day

The M8 door to door

From the city centre we join the M8 at Charing Cross or Townhead and stay on it to Newbridge, then take the A720 city bypass for the south side of Edinburgh or the A8 and Glasgow Road for the west and centre. It is about 47 miles and 1 h 10 min on a clear run, nearer 1 h 30 min if Hermiston Gait or Newbridge roundabouts are backed up. The van is loaded and strapped, so we drive it steadily rather than racing.

When the traffic bites

The M8 is slow eastbound between 07:30 and 09:30 and westbound from about 16:00, and Friday afternoons are worst in both directions. We aim to have the van on the motorway by late morning, which lands you in Edinburgh around lunchtime. During the Festival in August the city centre, the Old Town and Leith Walk are noticeably harder to get a van through, so we allow extra time and warn you about closures.

Harthill and the high ground

The stretch around Harthill and Shotts is the highest point on the M8 and the first to see snow, ice or thick fog in winter. Traffic Scotland occasionally closes a carriageway there, and the diversion through Whitburn adds half an hour. Between November and March we keep a margin in the plan and check the road before we leave. The rest of the year the only real hazard is roadworks around the Newbridge junction.

Breaks and the Edinburgh approach

Under two hours in the van means no scheduled stop, though the crew will pull into Harthill services if they have been loading since seven. Coming into Edinburgh we pick the approach for your postcode: the bypass and Lothianburn for Morningside and Marchmont, the A8 and Queensferry Road for the New Town, and the A720 round to Seafield or straight down Ferry Road for Leith.

Arriving in Edinburgh

  • Apply to Edinburgh Council for a parking bay suspension at least seven days ahead; most of the Old Town, New Town, Marchmont, Bruntsfield and Leith is a controlled zone with wardens who check regularly.
  • Old Town and New Town tenements often have spiral or half-landing stairs and no lift, so measure sofas and wardrobes and tell us the width of the tightest turn before the day.
  • Leith's converted warehouses and the newer blocks around The Shore usually need the lift booked and a loading bay slot arranged through the factor or concierge.
  • Streets in Morningside and Marchmont are narrow with cars both sides, and a Luton needs about two car lengths outside the door, so a suspension there is not optional.
  • August is Festival month; if your move falls then, expect road closures around the Royal Mile and Bristo Square and allow an extra hour for the last mile.

How it works

Moving from Glasgow to Edinburgh, step by step

  1. Quote from a walk-through

Send Peter a short video of your Glasgow home on WhatsApp, or book a visit. He confirms the volume, checks floors and parking at both addresses, and sends a fixed written price for the whole job. That figure covers the crew, the van, fuel and the drive across.

  2. Sort the Edinburgh parking

If your new street is in a controlled zone we tell you to apply to Edinburgh Council for a bay suspension, which needs at least seven days. Pack ahead or book our packers, and keep keys, documents and chargers in a bag that travels with you.

  3. Load in Glasgow

The crew arrives from 08:00, protects the close and door frames, and loads the heavy furniture first with boxes packed around it. Sofas and mattresses are wrapped before they touch the stair. Most flats are loaded and on the M8 within two to three hours.

  4. Unload in Edinburgh

We arrive early afternoon, put the van on the suspended bay, and carry everything to the rooms you name. Beds are rebuilt first so you can sleep that night. We take the flattened boxes away if you want and check the van before leaving.

FAQ

Glasgow to Edinburgh questions

Can you move us from Glasgow to Edinburgh in one day?
Yes, almost every Glasgow to Edinburgh move is a same-day job. We load in the morning, drive the M8 around midday and unload in the afternoon. Only very large houses or moves with a late key release need a second day, and Peter will say so when he quotes.
Do I need a parking permit in Edinburgh for the removal van?
In most central and inner Edinburgh streets, yes. Edinburgh Council issues parking bay suspensions with at least seven days' notice and the fee is modest compared with a ticket or a long carry. We tell you exactly which bays to ask for based on the van we are sending.
What if my Edinburgh keys are released late?
We build a buffer into the plan. The loaded van waits in Edinburgh rather than Glasgow, so once your solicitor calls we are minutes from the door. If the delay runs into the evening we can hold the van securely overnight and unload first thing, at a cost agreed before we leave Glasgow.
Is my furniture insured on the drive across?
Goods in transit cover is available for the whole move, from your Glasgow door to your Edinburgh door, and Peter will explain the level of cover and any excess when he quotes. Everything is blanket wrapped and strapped so it does not move on the motorway in the first place.
Can you collect from two Glasgow addresses on the way?
Yes, we regularly collect from a flat and a storage unit, or from two flatmates' addresses, before heading east. Tell Peter when you book so the loading order and the timings are planned properly, and the extra stop is priced into the fixed quote.
