Removals from Glasgow to Manchester
Straight down the M74 and M6, four hours door to door, and a crew that knows the difference between a Didsbury semi and a Salford Quays lift.

Distance
215 miles
Driving time
3 h 45 min to 4 h 15 min via the M74 and M6
Typical job
Same day
Manchester is the nearest big English city to Glasgow and the run is a simple one: M74 to the border, M6 south, and off at the M61 or M62 depending on where you are landing. Removals Glasgow to Manchester is about 215 miles and four hours of driving, which makes it a long single day with an early start or a comfortable two days for a bigger house. Clyde Movers does it regularly for job moves, students and families.
Moving from Glasgow to Manchester usually means one of a few types of home. City-centre and Salford Quays apartments come with concierge lift bookings, loading bays and time slots. Didsbury and Chorlton are Victorian terraces and semis with narrow streets and on-street parking. Fallowfield and Withington are student territory, with September move-in windows and shared houses. Peter checks the access for your address before he quotes so the crew and van are right first time.
We are Euro 6 and compliant with the Manchester Clean Air Zone as it currently stands, and we keep an eye on any changes to the scheme so nothing gets passed on to you by surprise.
The route and what shapes the day
M74 and M6 all the way
We leave Glasgow on the M74, cross the border at Gretna and follow the M6 south past Carlisle and Lancaster. For Salford Quays, the city centre and the north of Manchester we come off onto the M61; for Didsbury, Chorlton and the south we stay on the M6 to the M56. It is about 215 miles and around four hours with a loaded van, which is long enough to plan properly but short enough for a single day.
Same day with an early start
A flat or small house is a same-day job if the crew starts at 07:00. We are loaded by mid-morning, past Carlisle by lunchtime and unloading in Manchester mid to late afternoon. For a three-bed house or an uncertain key time we recommend two days, loading on day one and unloading first thing on day two while the van sits securely overnight. Peter suggests the plan that fits rather than the one that sounds quickest.
Traffic around Preston and the M60
The M6 between Preston and the M61 junction slows in the afternoon and the M60 ring road is busy from about 15:30. Friday afternoons and bank holiday weekends add an hour. City-centre streets around Deansgate and Piccadilly have bus gates and loading restrictions, so we plan the last mile for your postcode. We update you from the road with an honest arrival time rather than an optimistic one.
Shap, weather and the break
Shap summit on the M6 in Cumbria is the highest point of the route and catches snow and crosswinds in winter, occasionally closing for a few hours. We check the forecast the day before and leave earlier if the weather looks marginal. The crew takes a break at Tebay or Lancaster services, which adds twenty minutes and keeps the drivers fresh for the unload.
Arriving in Manchester
- City-centre and Salford Quays apartment blocks almost always need the lift booked with the concierge, often in a two-hour slot, and the loading bay is shared with deliveries, so send us the slot as soon as you have it.
- Manchester's Clean Air Zone has changed shape more than once; our vans are Euro 6 and compliant with the current scheme, and we check the status before every job so no charge lands on you unexpectedly.
- Didsbury, Chorlton and Withington are Victorian terraces with cars both sides; a 3.5t van needs two car lengths, so ask the council about a suspension if your street is tight.
- Fallowfield and the student streets have September move-in windows and some landlords hand over keys from an office in town, so plan the key collection before the van arrives.
- Bus gates and loading restrictions around Deansgate, Piccadilly and Oxford Road catch out plenty of vans; tell us the exact building and we plan the approach.
How it works
Moving from Glasgow to Manchester, step by step
Quote the whole move
Send Peter a walk-through video of your Glasgow home. He sizes the crew and van, checks floors and parking at both ends, and sends one fixed written price that covers crew, van, fuel and the drive. If a two-day plan makes sense he says so and prices the overnight.
Sort the Manchester end
For an apartment, book the lift and loading bay with the concierge and send us the slot. For a terraced street in Didsbury or Chorlton, ask Manchester City Council or Trafford about a parking suspension a week or more ahead. We tell you exactly what to ask for.
Load and drive south
The crew arrives from 07:00, wraps and straps everything and loads the van so the essentials come off first. We are on the M74 by late morning and text you our progress, including a realistic time from Carlisle onwards.
Unload in Manchester
We park in the booked bay, carry everything to the rooms you name, rebuild beds and reassemble wardrobes, then check the van before leaving. The crew stops overnight if the day has run long rather than driving four hours tired.
